a beru of a problem
I have been searching around and reading up on plug wires today inbetween things. I have my old set of wires that were what I guessed to be stock 83 wires, or at least the proper replacements. I read about the screw on Beru connectors. I went out in the garage and tried to unscrew the ends. Well, the cap ends were simple enough once I was able to see that it was in fact a threaded shaft inside the cap end connector, that screws into the plug wire end.
Then came the plug-end connector... Most of mine would mine would twist (most) and seems as though they would unscrew, but then they just kept twisting with no exit. Finally on one of them, I had had enough and tugged lightly and the wire just popped right out. I thought hmmmm. I posted about my confustion on an existing wire thread. Then after the second one repeated the first, I looked closer and could definitely see crimp marks on the wire. Looking inside the beru connector, it looks as though the threaded crimp-on piece had come loose on all of my wires. May explain why the new wires initially made the car run like a new car...:D And then, the last one, it screwed off! Huh, closer inspectoin showed it to be slightly different. Perhaps a past repair with an early style connector, as this one is like the cap connectors in that it screws into the wire end. Thanks for listening to my story... now for my question. apparently my crimp-on connectors are still threaded into the Beru plug end connectors. I was thinking about trying an ez-out tomorrow to try to extract them - carefully... I thought I would sleep on it and make sure I was going down the right path. Any other ideas.. better ideas that is? |
Interesting, any chance of you taking pictures of what the insides look like for others to see. Just for curiosity?

Yeah, I will post some tomorrow...

hey shane, whats up? if you want to just get new wires i would suggest the FIRE BRAID set from performance, (pelican might carry them) they are a top notch set with orginal beru connectors and are also red with would look good on your car. i bought a set (you saw them on my car) and so far they have been great. they run around 170 bucks.

Hey Don. Email when you have time. We need to catch up.

I wonder if a pencil would fit in there, eraser-first. It shouldn't be too difficult to unscrew them. Replacement ends are available. Mercedes dealers have them, and the special tool for crimping them. Crimping them is challenging (almost impossible) without the special tools. Mercedes dealers would probably crimp them for you.

Also, just so you know, the early style wires lacked the crimp thingie. Instead, the spark plug connector screws onto the bare wire. The spark plug connectors have male prongs inside, on the early style.

Yeah, I tried to remove one with an ez out. No luck. Being curious I started looking at the boot section that goes over plug. Seeing a picture here with one "disassembled", I made a bad decision to try to "unscrew" that area from the restof the plug end connector. Snap! I now know first hand what they look like inside. At least it was an old one and at least I was able to verify that they are in fact the SC type with the crimp on screw fitting. I think I actually have a crimper that will do this type of crimp out at work. Just gonna have to find another connnector now. Oh well. Bigger things to worry about in life.

It's my understanding that Magnecor wires are highly regarded specifically because they get rid of the troublesome and not particularly desirable Beru kludge connectors. Why would you want wires that retained them?
