911 SC: Small issue in first gear
Hi everybody
I have a small problem with first gear on my '82 911 SC. When I put the car in first (which goes perfectly) and I drive away it sometimes feels a bit like the engine shifts to the back of the car (which it isn't ofcourse). You could say it feels as if your seat slides a bit backwards (no, that isn't it ![]() It also feels as if something clicks in place. None of the other gears, including reverse, have this problem. Maybe it's important to mention: I have a Rennshift with stomski coupler installed. |

Have you checked for a loose or broken mount?

Yes I have. Everything is properly bolted on.
It only happens when I put the car in first gear and drive off. When shifting down from 3 to 2 for example (or shifting up) nothing weird happens. Also in reverse everything seems normal. Kind regards Tim |

I would guess the granny and engine mounts flexing when you torque the engine with the car standing still. I had new mounts and I could feel things suddenly shift when I drop out of first after a spirited start. The mounts are made of rubber. If your feeling is exaggerated, maybe you have old mounts?

i agree, just replaced all 4 mounts, 2-tranny, 2-engine, with sport mounts, they are stiffer then your original, actually they are made for the cabriolet which flex more than coupes, they will work fine on your car and i noticed the difference immeadiatly, the movement is gone, only takes an hour. when i took the old ones out they "looked" fine, no cracking or anything, and i thought this was a waste of money ($112.00 for all 4) however i took the old tranny mount and clamped it in a vice the i took a long screw driver and ran it thru the openning and was amazed at the amount of movement or flex there was in the old mount vs the new one. give it a try, you'll be glad you did.

Ok guys.
I'll try the mounts first. It's not expensive and there seems to be a consensus here that it's the way to go ![]() Thanks for the responses !!!! |

very simple, several threads showing how, i'll tell you how i did it, first remove the 2 out bolts from each mount, i did engine first then tranny, then loosen the center mounting bolt, i used a piece of a 2x6, put it across bottom on engine, put a jack under and lift angine a few inches only, remove the old mounts put in the new ones tighten outer bolts thread in mounting bolt, do both sides lower engine and tighten the center bolt, i heard 58lbs. torque, i did not know that at the time and just tightened them up well, the same procedure for the tranny, the jack just lifting it alittle bit and holding it in place, tighten the same way. good luck, all 4 mount are identicle, and come in go in the same way, very easy.

Robert, thanks a lot for the explanation (and the quick responses).
I'll try it that way and post an update as soon it's done. Beste regards Tim Last edited by tvanbroekhoven; 07-26-2008 at 02:05 PM.. |
