throttle linkage missing

Last night, I was returning home from a spirited drive in the'87 Carrera when the gas peddle went flat to the floorboard and the engine went to idle.
I got it home by tying the throttle ~1/3 open and using first gear (not far).

this morning I found the part of the throttle linkage missing from the pivot point at the transmission to the hole into the engine compartment.

I checked the car and the roadway--no luck. Aliens? Black hole?

Anybody know where to get a used replacement, and/or how to fashion a fix? I'm in Western NC.

If I recall, that part fo the throttle linkage is an arc-shaped bent hollow tube of sorts to span across the LH inner CV joint flange. However, if the metal rods on either side of said hollow bent tube are also bent, it is possible that the hollow bent tube could contact the CV joint flange. That may have ripped it right off.

Or so it seemed last time I was looking around in the LH wheel well. Not the brightest design I've ever seen ... but then again it usually seems to work.

In a quirk, something from the road can come up and hit the linkage and dislodge it. Once one end is loose, anything can happen including complete disappearance. It happened to me.

where did the linkage go?

my theory:
I was actually whipping the car pretty hard, and I think the ball part of the ball and socket joint that connects to the engine linkage came off.

Don't know if it was braded, welded, or bolted on; anybody?

Due to its orientation, the assy slid out of the engine compartment and under the car.
not to worry--we have lots of walkers in the neighborhood: someone probably found it and tossed it off the road. Worst case; I'll be rummaging through the rattlers, copperheads and bears, finding the cursed thing.....:D

Right now, it's running--got a piece of metal coat hanger strung between engine and pivot assy..........

--haven't heard about cat thefts but its probably going on--I don't get out much

where's my keys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You got that P.O.S. running so you can come down and run the dragon's tail with us?
You can bring the keys when you come down for that.

If you promise not to come busting into our bedroom at 2AM wanting to leave on a trip again, wife said you could stay here.

I'm not hauling any firewood this time--I had to get the Orkin Man to spray my car to get all the bugs out from last time!

thanks, Bob............
I broke down and ordered the whole assy from dcautomotive for $50. They're located in Rocky Mount, and I should get it in 3 days.
That'll guarantee that the lost piece will turn up...................

Brorag 07-30-2008 04:04 PM

gotcha, you wiley little bustard!

Like I figured, after I ordered the replacement, the original linkage turned up, found by a gal walking her dog, in the same place we had looked before.
It was fate...............or hubris--the flaw that leads to the downfall of the tragic hero. (that's me)
  • new paint
  • new engine
  • new top
  • new interior
I was so proud..................
first ride, and the car stalls on the steepest grade in Henderson County (16%), and in the middle of the road.
Pride goeth before the fall.................................

the reason? The bradded ball came out of the lever arm at the pivot base on the engine.

I'll use the new one since it comes with the top lever.
