Oil Change ...removing old filter
 

I am changing my oil on my '77 930.

I can not for the life of me figure out how to get the old oil filter out?
There simply isn't enough room w/ the A/C unit and air intake housing taking up most of the space.

I can't imagine that I have to remove the A/C unit to get the old filter out?

I am referring to Wayne's book and my owner's manual, yet both just say "remove old filter" -LOL.

I'll post a pic soon, so you can see what I am talking about, yet if anyone has had this same issue, i'd love to hear what the best solution is,

Most folks unbolt the A/C compressor, lay a blanket across the right quarter panel, and lay the compressor there, out of the way. With the lines still attached. Piece of cake.

Hmmm. I just stick an oil filter wrench on the thing, then a small ratchet, and start cranking. Haven't noticed the AC stuff getting in the way. Sorry, not much help to your predicament.

Okay, I figure your right about removing the A/C, yet Iam 75% finished removing the air intake housing ...once that is out I'll have access. ...thanks. I think the 930's w/o intercooler and A/C are a little different than the other 911's/930's. ...more of a crowded space.

It may depend on what AC compressor you have. I believe the one in my '76 Turbo is the original York and the lines going to and from it can be rotated on the compressor body allowing for some "wiggle room". But yes, it's very tight and if you try pulling the filter without removing the compressor be sure to put down a few rags to catch the mess that will ensue.

A chain wrench is your friend for this job.

Get a chain wrench or adjustable filter wrench.

Don't be taking off the filter housing or the compressor.

getting the filter off isn't the issue, i was able to get the filter off no problem. It was removing the filter from the small space that it was locked into that was the issue. The A/C and air intake unit was preventing me from removing the filter. -hope that makes sense. basically, once I had the filter loosened, i couldn't take it out of the engine compartment ...there just wasn't a large enough opening anywhere.

I took the entire air intake unit off, which wasn't too bad, ...this allowed me the space to remove the filter.

I'll post a photo, yet my 2 kids have been making this oil change process and taking a photo about 10x as long as it should take!
