'84 911, odometer not working but nylon gears are fine?!?

Hello Experts,

I'm hoping someone can give me some hints as to what I need to disassemble next as I expected to see a nylon gear without teeth but instead I see seemingly flawless gears that are unwilling to turn. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1217298403.jpg

Thanks!

How about more pics from every angle so we can see what might be happening?

So the gears are bound such that you can't roll them at all by hand or it just doesn't work in the car? Any one of the numbers and their pinions can become jammed pretty easily. If you are able to roll the numbers over it's probably save to assume in an electical issue; Stepper Motor, Circuit Board, Sending Unit, or any of the wires in between the gauge and the sending unit.

Edit: That the gear is not discolored probably indicates that it has already been repaired assuming you aren't the original owner.

Note, the comment in my 1st post ended up at the bottom. Just to re-iterate...the gears don't move when I try to turn them by hand.

I wasn't sure if that meant they didn't turn on their own or couldn't be turned :)

I assume you've got some play at one or the other it might be possible to zero in on the problem area but you've got it so far apart now I'd just start pulling c-clips if it doesn't be come obvious in a hurry. The mechanism is pretty simple. You have attempted to rotate the "indicator-gears" I assume? It's fairly difficult to rotate from the driven end if I recall correctly.

Found the problem, there were pieces of what looks like the previous yellow gear bits stuck in one of the odometer gears, causing it not to turn at all. It's now able to turn freely with no resistance. I put everything back together and installed it late last night, but I'm having new problems as the only part that seems to be working between the odometer/spedometer is the bulb that indicates that my lights are on :/

I'm going to look back at the pictures I took of the connecting wires to ensure I put everything back correctly the night before.

Thanks for everyones help & advice!
