hunting at idle and jamming accelerator
Since a recent dealer service my original 3.2 has started hunting at idle (cold and sometimes hot) and when hot the car's idle frequently jams at 2000 rpm when lifting off the accelerator. It takes an aggresive stab on the accelerator to bring it down to normal. When lifting off to change gear it seems to be fuel starved. The dealer is miles away. Any clues before I jump in myself? I'm biased towards AFM.

The idle switch is likely not engaging, the 2000 rpm idle is the clue.
This switch clicks on when the throttle is closed and engages the idle speed control unit. The switch mounting bracket is in front of the throttle body and can be adjusted to get the switch positioned correctly. With the engine off, move the throttle lever and if the switch is working ok, you can hear it clicking. You can also check it with an ohm meter. You need a stubby Phillips to access the 2 mounting screws. I installed a couple of hex screws instead to make the job easier. |
