Keep Stock Air Filter Box or Not?
 

My 3.2 has the factory air box which has been drilled and has a K&N oiled air filter.

Besides being a nightmare to get to the factory spring clips, I am wondering if I would be better off getting some kind of Cold Air short system with a cone style oiled filter and associated tube.

Anyone have one like that and if so, how do you like it?

Any noticeable difference?

Brand? (I see K&N doesn't have one)

Boy, the air filter is about one of the easiest things to service on my 911 ...

You won't gain any power by changing the intake system. You will get more induction noise, so it may seem more powerful.

K&N filters, IMO, don't filter as well as paper filters. All the ones I've had I could see little specks of daylight through.

where I live, it gets quite dusty, so I converted back to a stock air filter, and kept the stock airbox. You need to remove the oil filter to get the bottom clip on and off, and on mine also the rear decklid strut too.

Yeah, I know how it is "supposed" to be done, but try doing it without removing the second strut and the oil filter. Pretty much sucks.

I just cleaned and re-oiled the K&N that the PO put in, so it should be good for at least the end of the season.

Does anyone actually make the "cold air" system for these cars?

You guys can't reach under and over the airbox to reach the clips? Not around the side, but over and under.

You need a really skinny arm to reach back there without removing those items. I tried it once or twice in fits of self gratuitous laziness, and both times got rewarded by leaving skin and blood on the car. So, I defer to common sense now.

A "cold air" system is likely to get the same temperature air as the stock system. When the engine fan is running, I don't think there are any ventilation issues in the engine compartment.

Is the AireTEK the only one on the market? I can't find anything else.

As far as reaching under, over, around, etc., not unless you have a real skinny, real long arm and spray it with WD-40 first.

That, ebay specials and handmade jobs is all I've seen.

As far as reaching the clips goes, I guess being average height and weight pays off sometimes.

In my view...a compromise is the best solution. Cut back the stock filter cover to only end up with a "ring".. a la "Cup" lid.
Eases access to clips, etc....considerably....

I have one, and you won't see any difference in performance. I am going back to stock, when I get around to it. :p

But the engine bay has so much more open space!
