Anyone rewired their car with an aftermarket system?
While in the process of converting my car to a mainly track machine I have completely removed the harness. As expected being 40 years old the wires are brittle, there are cracks and many of the connections have obviously been repaired over the years. I have thought of obtaining the correct coloured wire and building a new harness but then the thought struck that there are plenty of companys out there who make 'generic' harnesses with modern fuse panels and all the circuits I would need for a car with power nothing
![]() For example these guys http://www.ezwiring.com/wiring_harness.html So anyone rewire their car using one of these systems, how did it go and any gotchas I should watch for? Also any recommendations of a good source?

I used the VW kit from watson streetwerks. They have a made for them harness from american autowire. Should be everything you need. The only thing I noticed missing was the backup light circuit.

I have done my '74 track car using a Painless street/strip kit. I was in the same situation as you were, my harness was removed and mangled by the PO. I decided to redo it an save some weight and gain reliability at the same time. Used an 8 switch box with modern fuses.
I would recommend becoming very familiar with the color coding of our 911s. I wired and routed one system at the time. I ended up splicing the kit to my OEM harness by the starter, soldering and shrink wrapping. Did this because I wanted the plugability of the 14 pin connector and also because the kit was made for front engine cars and I did not want to extend individual wires more than necessary. I think it was well worth the effort, but it is not for the faint of heart since it can be a very complex project if you are not familiar with how the systems function. Including pictures... Enjoy! Thanks for the links. I have a 68 so it's wiring is pretty simple already, the only issue I can see is that it has a alternator with an external regulator so I have to figure that out.

How about a harness for an '84 with power windows, a dome light, and a trunk light? My wiring has been completely messed up by the PO.
Thanks, John

I have wired 3 cars (60's mustangs and a FFR Cobra sorry) with the EZ wiring kit. If you are looking at painless be sure to check out EZ wiring. They are on Ebay and sell for $165. The painless is quite a bit more and really not that much different. I have used both.

I guess I would also have a rear defroster to worry about. Would I just have to splice in the old stuff?

i used the painless universal 18 circuit harness. it is fine except the documentation is not great. the wires are all labeled but it is really for a muscle car, not a porsche. the most difficult part is spicing into the turn signal and wiper stalks, the porsche wiring is quite different than the painless system. if (and when) i need to do this again i would just do it from scratch.

those of you that used EZ, which kit? The link in the first post shows 3 separate kits.
Thanks.

Sorry, I can't speak about the circular relays. I know the kit comes with relays for the horns and an electric fan. It's a very nice kit for the money. Good luck!
