Need help with 914 keys, i will explane wrong forum(EASY?)
hey chaps, im purchasing a 914 that has no key.does the ignition have the same tummbler code for the door?can i pop a door cylinder and have it keyed to work instead of the ign. switcht?i have to take the panels off anyway and rather not mess with the ignition.i dont even know if a 914 uses 1 key or 2..just planing ahead..the reason i posted here is because i know there are a lot of 914 owners here as i have become a 2 pcar owner now a 83sc coupe and 72 914 1.7..there are only 2 people in the 914 forum..thanks for understanding my wrong forum post..mike

914's use the same red key/black key system as an early 911. Since it's essentially a Targa, the red key will operate all locks, the black key only the doors and ignition. You should have the red key for the glove and the front trunk.
I might have that bassackwards, but you get the point. It's called a valet key that does only the doors and ignition. |

Assuming the PO did not rekey one of the other locks (i.e. the ignition key is different than the other keys), then a decent locksmith will be able to make a key from one of your tumblers.

well i dont have either key.by what your saying i can take the trunk cylinder out and get it keyed to work all locks?

its a one owner car so maybe not i hope.does anyone know for sure what i need to do, thanks

I would first try a key made from one of the other locks. The glove box lock is the easiest to get out.

See the rekeying article I wrote in the tech articles section. Really easy to do it...
