911SC Short Shift Kit Problem

I have just purchased a the factory short shift kit for my 1983 911SC from Pelican and my mechanic installed it the other day. I was impressed with the appearance of the quality of the kit.

The thing is that there is a problem - the kit works as expected (ie. well) except for the fact that the gear lever sticks in 5th gear and won't come out unless one nudges it further away from neutral. It sticks in 5th gear solid and you can't remove it with both hands if you just try to pull it straight out.

If you give it a nudge from neutral, the gear lever will move, and there is a slight binding/clicking noise when the gear lever comes out of gear. There is no other issue with any other gear. The gear change was fine before the short shift kit was installed.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue may be? I understand that the only adjustment can be done from the rear of the selector mechanism, and we haven't done this yet - query whether it will work - but I don't see why that should be necessary if all that has changed is the short shift kit and its pivot internal point?

Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks & Regards,

Pull the shifter boot up so you can get a look at the reverse lockout mechanism.

I had that problem. I adjusted the coupler at the back and it went away. This may be related to the reverse lock out as well.

Nice place, nice car, lose the cookie cutters.

OK thanks I'll have a look at the mechanism under rubber boot (including reverse lockout) and see if anu adjustments make any difference.

I agree regarding the cookie cutters - I prefer the Fuchs too but the cookies were original - I'm in the market for a nice original set for the right price and would prefer the 15s...

"I have just purchased a the factory short shift kit for my 1983 911SC from Pelican and my mechanic installed it the other day."

Did you pay your mechanic to adjust it as well as install it? A little sarcasm. Take it back to the mechanic and ask him to finish the installation.

BTW, it also sounds like a shift coupler adjustment.

Adjust the coupler so the shift lever is just a little bit further forward. It's catching the reverse lockout while in 5th.

Nice car!
Welcome to the forum, lots of great people here to help...
For what it is worth, my 83 came with 16" wheels, I believe 6 and 7 inch widths...
