Anybody tried a 964/993 AC condenser upgrade into earlier car?

Has anybody installed or tried to install a 964 or 993 Air Conditioning condenser in a 1988 or earlier car. Is it possible? It seems that this could be a good affordable upgrade to these cars.

I asked that question 15 years ago at the shop fixing my AC and was told its not the compressor its the rest of the system. 964 and 933 have a pair of evaporators I believe versus one on the 1989 and earlier models.

Opps. Thought you meant COMPRESSOR. Next time I'll use my reading glasses.

Hey Shaffer,

Here is the best thread on the topic (look at the thread referenced in it also: 993 condenser):

993 Condenser in a 911...Anyone Complete This???

I have studied this issue at great length and I think it is worth doing for several reasons: reducing the thermal load on the engine, getting weight off of the back of the car, limitation of the other methods. How difficult and expensive it will be is another issue. You are fortunate in that you live near (in the second case fairly near) two reputable Porsche experts and shops that do this kind of conversion: Matt at TPWS in Austin (512) 836-5949 and Jim at Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix (602) 244-0911.

It is a rather tight fit to put a 964/993 condenser under the front drivers fender but it can be done. If you talk with Matt let him know that I told you about this possibility at TPWS. I would be interested what you find talking to him. If you could send me a private email after you talk with him that would be great.

Good Luck, Greg

Thanks Greg,
I went and spoke to Matt at TPWS today about doing the 993 condensor conversion and I am going to have him do the work.

PS It will eliminate the condenser on the engine decklid which I like to get the heat away from my 3.6 conversion engine. It will also eliminate the condenser away from the front so that I can duct my additional front oil cooler in the bumper better. It makes since that if the 964 and 993 air conditioning systems can run off of the one front mounted condenser with r 134a then why can't an earlier car be retrofitted. I am sure that the other aftermarket condenser set ups work very well if not better but the simplicity of this upgrade makes since to me.
