My So-Called "Trunk"
 

Wow. This is really going to be an adventure! I am taking a little road trip in my "new" car, and trying to figure out how to get everything I need to bring into the car. I'm a track worker for the NASA-SE Hotlanta Challenge at Road Atlanta this weekend, and it's going to be a hot one, so I need to bring:

small soft bag with clothes (duffle)
backpack with track supplies
cooler (full size for track use)
water & gatorade (grocery bag)
rain gear (ponchos, boots)
laptop computer
purse

What I can fit into the trunk:
rain gear
laptop (hate to keep it in there - heat!)

I am limited inside the cabin because the back seats are "permanently" folded down with a large aftermarket speaker box protruding from the seat-back area over them (and taking up precious footage there!).

Even loading up the front seat, I don't see how I can bring the full-size rolling cooler (a real life-saver track side!). I will have to leave this behind and get a little styrofoam one near the track tomorrow AM.

Dump the speakers. Reclaim that cargo space. My wife and I took a two week trip in my Carrera. You have to pack carefully but it can be done if you use the back seat area. The big roll around ice chest may be a challenge to haul in a 911. You may have to get two smaller ones to fit back there.

What I can fit into the trunk:
rain gear
laptop (hate to keep it in there - heat!)


depending on the color of your car i find the trunk area to be quite cool in my 930, :D

I have lived with a 911 as my only car for many, many years so packing one has become an art form that I have mastered.

The trick is simply this...No Hard Sided Containers. You would be amazed at how much stuff will fit in a 911 when you can stuff things into all of the irregularly shaped areas.

Hopefully you are talking about the early cars as the 964 and the 993 are even more of a challenge to fit stuff in.

If you get creative you can fit a lot more in your trunk than you think. I agree with Fast Corners.. soft containers / luggage work wonders in stuffing stuff into the trunk.

I bet you could get the cooler there. I did a cross-country trip in the 911, overpacked, and was still comfy. I also brought a front and rear bumper from CT down to NY in it. Reclined front seat, lots of towels and blankets for padding, and done.

I'd stuff everything you can into the cooler, then put the cooler in the seat.

x2 on dumping the speaker boxes. Don't need em.

Ditto on soft luggage...If you don't ditch the speakers, go soft on the cooler. I have a few medium sized coolers that are made of waterproof fabric/plastic lined. While not as well insulated as a hard cooler they still do pretty well. Just buy ice at the gas station near the track....empty and collapse them down when returning home.

Haha! OK I'm at a stopping point waiting out Atlanta traffic at a Decatur coffee shop (Indie Coffee & Books). Here's how I did it, and got in more than I'd even listed:

Got my folding chair in there, and I have both coolers with me. W00t! Heheh! OK back on the road in a few - thanks for the encouragement!

Get rid of the speakers, and pack carefully. I had to pack & unpack 2-3 times before I could get dad's Carrera loaded up with everything I needed for a 9 day roadtrip with my wife. Tent, sleeping bags, coolers, food... I even brought a marine BBQ on a tripod.

If you really make a mission out of it, you'll be amazed what you can pack in.

That's cheating :P... you didn't have to deal with the front seats in that cab.

That's a monstrous cooler and a huge folding chair.

Yeah I can definitely downsize on the chair! But the cooler, I need. It's crucial to keep myself & my coworkers (and often, drivers) cool & hydrated thru the weekend. Need the wheels because I can't get my car anywhere near where I need to unload. Anyway, it fit fine in the backseat, didn't even come close to obstructing my view.

Along the way, I added: one huge watermelon, my new helmet, and a bag of groceries. Awesome!

If it had gotten the original hatchback intended it would really have a lot of easily usable space - doubt it would be too rigid tho.

Even as, there is a huge amt. of space in this car as opposed to any other sports car...

When I first learned that the speaker box thing was "permanently" obstructing the back seats from folding up, I was pretty aggravated. This car is close to original in every way, except this...THING. You can be sure it's at the top of my to-do list.

All that said, the stereo is pretty doggone excellent in this car, best car stereo I've ever had. I stuck ten of my all-time favorite CDs in there for the drive and I enjoyed being able to flip them on when I was ready to hear something besides the vroom-vroom from behind (which I do love to hear!). With stuff back there, the speakers are obstructed, though, so this thing's gonna go for sure.

As you can see, with the passenger seat pulled forward a little, I was able to get the full-size cooler back there just fine. And the room in the floorboard held my groceries - and the watermelon :)

the woofer can be relocated to the smuggler box or under the pass. seat
