Installed 2nd battery and alt. light now comes on???

Car is a '70. I had been running the car with one batter (covered up psgr side pos. cable) but just tonight i installed the 2nd battery which has been sitting for about two months maybe.

So the car starts but the alt. light is on and it hasn't been before. What might this be and should i pull the 2nd battery to avoid possible trouble? I'm doing a day trip tomorrow that is maybe 8hrs round trip so i'd like to not have any roadside issues.

Did you check/charge the second battery before installing?

that light is the 'exciter' light that tells you that you're not charging the battery. I'd recommend sticking with a single battery. is there a reason you want to run two? normally when you rev the engine the light should go dark telling you that the alt is charging the battery.

well i'd like to have the 2nd battery for balance actually. not sure exactly how well it works to that end but as i have two sonnenschiens i figure i might as well use them.

take a hard look at a gel battery and if you want balance relo it to the smugglers box. rennline has a nice set up, so does wevo. I run the wevo open. the batteries available today are amazing as you know. You can get a lot of CCA in a small package. I have deleted both my battery boxes in favor of extra oil coolers.

back to your issue, is the single battery not functional?

gonna go pull it now and check voltage.

the single batt. setup was working fine actually. i had ordered two of the sonnenschiens (sp?) and didn't give a lot of thought to going with just one. in the process of getting the car back on the road (front pan, weber rebuild, new fuel pump, etc) i just dropped one batt. in to get things going.

take a look at those options I mentioned. I think you'll be very happy with the result.

there was a reason they put 2 batteries up there. Weight and balance maybe? to me that is the place the early 911s need weight, way up front and in the front corners.

I bet the second battery is dead. Put it on a good charger overnight and see what the voltage is in the morning.

I would run 2 batteries. I have this setup in my '73 and I like the way it works.

Check your battery cables on the added side especially the ground strap. Corroded or damaged wires will not flow current.
