Running like a Champ!
 

The most recent changes I have made to my '72 T include replacement of the heat exchangers and muffler with headers and sport muffler. At first the car ran rough and very, very loud! But after some fiddling with points, timing and carbs it runs like a champ and quieter. The car pulls very well through all the gears and the only draw back is fuel $$$ and economy...it loves the gas. The carbs seem perfectly balanced right now to the set up. My fingers are crossed it stays that way. I set the timing at 5 deg BTDC to allow for the vacuum lines being plugged and the carbs. I lubed the distributor and the it has no problem hitting 30-35 deg at 6000 rpm. The only down side right now is the exhaust flanges between the headers and muffler didn't seal well so I have a slight backfire during let off. My plan is to have the flanges replaced for new ones with the hopes this goes away. Otherwise I love the look, sound and drive of the new set-up.

BTW I went from oil temps in the 220 range to steady hard running 190 consistent. THAT I CAN LIVE WITH!!! And the oil stove smell is gone.

Points!!! Every consider putting a Pertronix module in the distributor to replace the points? I just did this to my '73 and it made a huge difference.

Does your car have Bosch CDI?

It is great not to worry about dwell and timing drifting!

Headers sound like a great upgrade.

I have them on my list. Pertronix (no points) sounds great. The thing is, I wanted to see the difference the changes made on their own. So now that the car runs great on headers, carbs, A/C delete and modified muffler I will go with the Pertronix and have a good base line. My car has Bosch CDI...yes. The headers have reduced the temp quite a bit. I removed the heat exchangers and put in a block off plate on the right side of the engine, still looking for the left side cover I hope it brings the temp down further.

After swapping my CIS for Webers, my temps went down to 190 and rarely ever go above that. Now that everything is tuned, the car gets good gas mileage (above 20mpg) in the country, but much less in the stop-and-go traffic. I have the stock heat exchangers and muffler and will upgrade those someday soon for SSI's and one of Ben's (M&K) "2 in, 1 out" stainless muffler. I'm glad you're enjoying your car!

BTW, I had Pertronix and my mechanic (Tab Tanner) recommended that I swap them for good old points, so I did and haven't had a problem with thm in almost 2 years.
