(vacuum?) hose question on 3.2 conversion
 

Okay, I've gotten to the point where I'm scoping out how to match up the various hoses on my new 3.2 engine with the available hoses on my '77. I'm using Marc's 3.2 conversion instructions, but I'm not clear on the device pictured below. It is a black plastic cannister on the back of my 3.2 with 2 hoses coming from the top and 1 hose coming from the bottom of it. None of the 3 hoses are connected to the engine, they are all just hanging there. The only 2 available hoses I can find on my '77 are:

1. the small hose that fed into the charcoal cannister
2. some kind of vacuum (?) hose that is routed near the fuel lines (see second pic below)

Can anyone give some guidance please? I'd like to know what to do with all all the hoses menitoned here. Thanks!

I installed a 3.2 in my '77 over the winter and I don't recall seeing anything like that canister in the first pic. What did the 3.2 engine come out of?

The hose with the ??? marks in the second pic is for the brake booster. I can get a pic of the attachment point on the engine if needed.

Scott, if it's not too much trouble a pic of the attachment point would be very helpful, thanks. I should add that in the pic with the ??? marks, I had written "boost" on the blue tape, but it was just a guess. So you're pretty sure that's what it is? Oh, and the 3.2 came from an '87.

Yes that's the brake booster vacuum line that runs up to your front trunk. It attaches to the engine here:

Scott - this is very interesting. I located that point on my 3.2 and it has been blocked off with a note attached from the PO stating "not used on my setup, leave as is." His setup was also a midyear 3.2 conversion. What would be the consequence of not connecting this brake booster line?

Anyone else have any thoughts on the mystery cannister from my 1st pic?

The earlier mid-year cars did not have vacuum assisted brakes. If you don't connect the brake booster line then I think you'd need to plug it off. Then your brake pedal will feel alot harder than normal. I don't suggest this.

I suggest hooking up the brake booster line.

Thanks for the explanation, Scott - I will indeed hook up that line! Now that you mention it, the PO's car was a '74, so like you said it probably didn't have vacuum assisted brakes. Hey, since you have done the 3.2 conversion, would you mind if I PM'd you with a motronic harness question?

I'm following this thread out of curiosity as I have no experience with later cars but from reading on the board, some later cars have the charcoal cannister in the engine compartment on the passenger side instead of the front trunk area or under the front fender as in older cars. I'd guess the cannister in your first post is that charcoal cannister. In your car isn't in the front somewhere?

L.J.- well, the engine is a 3.2 from an '87, but the chassis is a '77. The charcoal cannister on the '77 is in the engine compartment (passenger side). I'm not sure if they were ever attached to the actual engine like in my first pic.

I think the first pic might show an '87 charcoal canister, or perhaps a '74 canister since the engine came out of a '74 chassis.

I've got my '86 3.2 engine hooked up to the '77 charcal canister in the engine bay.

Scott, can you describe where the hookup is on the 3.2 for the '77's charcoal cannister?

Okay, I think I found where the two top hoses on that mystery cannister (first pic in this thread) plug into. One goes to the air cleaner box and the other to the throttle body, so I'm guessing this is some sort of EGR device. The hose coming out of the bottom of the cannister is very long and may run up to the front of the car (expansion tank maybe?). Could the bottom of this cannister be where I need to plug in the small hose that ran to the charcoal cannister on my '77? Moreover, if this thing is indeed EGR related, should I even bother hooking it up in my '77?
