Why is is you can buy a 2001-2002 911 turbo for about the same price as a 1991-1992 Turbo with roughly the same mileage

I understand they are completely different cars but while shopping around for a turbo and I keep getting the 2001-2002 turbo's coming up in my price range.

Less demand for the later cars. The 996 series wasn't as well received as the older cars, even though the turbo is diffferent. Lot's of people don't care for the styling. The interior doesn't impress many people.

The 965 is still a DYI car whereas the 996 Turbo isn't.

I'm a complete DIY'er right down to rebuilding the motor in my last car myself but I have to admit it's darn tempting to buy a 2001 Turbo with 20,000 miles for $50K. Still a heck of a car and their starting to grow on me.

I really want a 94 turbo with the 3.6 but the lowest price I've seen is $62K which is way out of my reach. Decent 91's are going for $45K-$55K.

It's sure hard to be patient when your garage is empty......................

Supply and demand. There are a lot more 996TT's around than 964 Turbos. High supply drives down the price. Also, the 964 turbo is starting to become a collector's car, which drives up the price. Personally, I love the look of the older car, but 996TT is much more of a usable everyday supercar. I'm actually battling some inner demons right now on a possible 996TT purchase. The problem is that I'd have to sell not only the 996, but probably also the '84 (which is my sentimental "never sell" car) in order to come up with the down payment for the TT. I'm not sure that the trade-off is worth it to me in the end.

What's a DYI car?

Do It Yourself car: a car you can repair and upgrade with your own tools and knowledge.
The opposite would be a car which needs to serviced by a dealer.

This issue has been troubling me lately as well.

I love the 80's 930's. I know logically that the newer ones are better. Now the 2001-2003 are not only better they are also cheaper. By cheaper I mean than what you would eventually spend maintaining and upgrading a 930. I just don't love the 2001+ looks, weight, image.

If you want classic looks, good performance, plan to drive for fun only, like to work on yourself and hope the car will maintain or go up in value...older turbo.

If you want ok looks, great performance, may drive regularly/daily, don't really work on and don't care about investment...newer turbo.

The newer ones are "better" cars on paper in just about every way you can statistically count. That being said many of us just like the older ones better. Supply is the ultimate issue, they pumped out so many 996 TT's that they're everywhere and they are one hell of a bargain at this point. Make mine an 89 still please.
