missing grounds and burned up alt wires
I have taken the alternator out of my 70 911E Sporto to check on cause of alt light on and burned up ground wire (D-) coming from alternator and leading to VR.
I discovered both the engine case ground and the electrical panal grounds disconnected by the PO. Can anyone help with the following questions; 1) Where and to what should the engine case ground strap connect to? 2) Could these missing grounds cause the wiring melt down I discovered? The ground strap behind the fan just connects to one of the engine case bolts. From the looks of your ground strap in the picture it looks like you will need a new one as the eye hole appears to have been torn off.
The ground strap for the electrical plate I believe attaches to a ground point (brazed on stud) beyond the electrical plate near the firewall. |

Thanks for your reply to my post. My photo was a poor choice. The engine ground strap is connected to a case bolt, it is the other side that I am questioning? Does this attach to the alternator? Thanks Maze |

a ground wire has to go the the alternator from the engine so yes i think so.

There is no such thing as too many grounds, mechanically speaking of course.
The engine is well insulated from the chassis by the rubber motor/trans mounts, and the ground path must be maintained to prevent backfeeding through other circuits. For instance, if there is a bad plug or wire the coil will try to arc to ground any way it can, and I've hear this is how ignition modules get damaged. |
