soft window targa kit should I build them
after getting my new 911, while going through it fine a fine comb,, I find out that it is a soft window, that had been changed to a fix window ,, after some research I found that the hardest part to find is the handles , the rest can be easily made, after research I found a unlimited source of the handles ,
so now I am considering making a kit, but couple of questions how many people would be interested ? what is a fair price for a kit that would include NOS handles and reproduced other part , without the vinyl ( it easily available from other vendors) any opinion? |
I would be interested- but not necessarily a buyer. What does it look like, how does it work, and approx how much would it cost?
|
swt
it would be like the original targa soft window, either for the real SWT or retrofit
search around there is picture you can buy the vinyl for some other guy ( lto get better price) I would supply all the other component, the 2 handles, the2 bearing sleeves, the 2 bars upper ahd lower, and the 3 mounting nut for the back, the aluminium side spacer and instruction essentially all the hard parts to find as for the price I have no idea yet, I do not know what the parts go for (too rare), the vinyl is about 250$ , butr i'll post pricing once I have a reference to go by, |
soft top
I would be very interested to buy the conversion
|
so far i found out that the set of latch (not perfect sells for about 400) NOS surely more , mine would be in the same range and then i'll add the rest , i'll make one for me then a secvond one and offer it to the first one in line for the determined price

For $1800, you'd be wise to post some pics and more details. You also should add the vinyl window too. Why not make a real conversion kit that gives your customer all that they need?

Ones that was offered to me ,was rentals for reproduction purpose ( had that ability ). As for sale ? seen once in 1200$ range |
I placed a WTB awhile back for the handles and they were used and offered to me for $400 and another for $450.
|
I am sure Porsche did not custom make the handles. Freezing probably found a more common application (on a MB, VW or Opel?) that uses the same handles and bought some NOS.
I once found out that a run of the mill CA car with smog pump uses the same oil filler neck than the tri-carb or OAI optioned muscle car of the same make and era. All I had to do is get all the beater oil filler necks from the CA junk yard and sell them as super rare oil filler necks to those guys who need all correct parts for an OAI or tri carb vehicle. ;) Wasn't a huge money maker but $80 oil filler necks were a quick buck (easy to ship too) on Ebay. soft window kit
ok there is profit but do you know how much it cost to have jigs made to reproduce all the other parts
the kit includes everything you need to put a soft window on your targa( the the handle , the receiver , the 2 hoops, the 3 special bolt for the back and the window( vinyl etc ) here are picture of all the parts but the window ( wich i buy from a reputable specialist) and since i buy a lot i get a better deal and i passs it on to you) UPS left a note on my door ( they have arrived) they will also be selling the kit from me last time i saw one for sale it went for 1400US( just the hardware) and the window cost 600$ so do the math i will be posting picture of it installed in a couple of days, and there is already one sold in Italy regards http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235014962.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235014998.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235015028.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235015065.jpg |
This could be a really promising solution for those of us who own and love to restore these VERY rare targas. Might be even more promising if you focus on those with non original soft window targas, and figure out how to convince that audience to use your factory handles together with those non original bent aluminum (the factory used bent steel) top supports. They might not know, or care about, the difference. I have a couple E targas and think it would be cool to spend $1,500.00 for a kit to make one of them feel like a real convertible. I am not going to cut corners and save +/- $500.00 on non-original Porsche soft window parts on my $60,000 '68S or $100,000 '67S targas, but I wouldn't give it a second thought on that E.
BTW, Stoddard sells a nice folding rear window for $574.95 ea. Don't know what their 'volume discount' would be. |

soft window kit
here is a picture of the window , ill be posting picture of it installed within a couple of days , its cold here ( canada) and it takes a long time to warm the garage up and woking with cold vinyl is a bad receipe
by te way all the inner structure is galvanized steel ( like the original ), not aluminium http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235090316.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235090369.jpg |
Looks great, I can't wait to see what it looks like installed. I'm picking up a swb targa tomorrow that I would love to restore with a soft window, I'll be keeping an eye on this!

That is a very nice fit to the top. I like the kit. I would be all over this product if I had not already converted my targa.
|
Nice look and research. I hope your kit is a success. Where did you get the window from, stoddard or auot international, or did you have is made? I need one for the finishing touch on a long restoration an my 67.

can I convert ?
I have a 1970 911 Targa which is not a short wheel base. I really like the soft window targa's and I was wondering if the soft window conversion can be done on my car? Was the window size different for the swb targa's. Any ideas?
Thanks, Keith |
soft window kit
all the targa's up to 1985 have the same window ,so the kit could fit up that year ,, in the case of a 70 , since it was an option then you should already have the 3 tabs at the rear of the car and the holes in the targa bar to mount the handles , even if they are not present they can be installed , it has been done before
you will also need to cut your targa headliner , but i supply a template with the kit when it is the case i could send you picture of what to look for freez |
Thanks for your responce, I'm happy to hear that it can be done. This is something that I have just started thinking about since I just learned about this kit through this thread. I am definitely interested in doing this but it may take until late winter to have room in my budget. I think it would be a great upgrade to my 911 and worthwhile to do not to mention that it looks easy enough judging by the pics.
Thanks, Keith |
I have most of the parts for an original soft window conversion, but am missing some of the things needed.
Any chance you can sell misc pieces? Have what I am told is about 80% of the factory bits right now. Thx, Joe A PS was just in Niagara Falls ONT and know exactly what you are talking about regarding the cold. HOW do you guys survive up there? :) |
SWT parts
i have all the parts, but some are not intergchangeable from the one i make to the OEM one
what do you need just email me , to get a faster answer yves |
Yves,
Thanks much! Will email you later on, am on a flight and out of the country right now. Used to spend a lot of time in your area, worked for Bombardier for a long time. Once I get home and can find out what all I have, will get back to you. Thanks! Joe A |
So whats the price on the whole kit?

911 swt
I guess I'm cofused ,from what I can gather from the 911 Shop manuals I didn't think this was the way they did it , Do you have any other pics or info that would help clear up the installation of this type of window into the targa
Thanks in advance Bret |
Bret, I am not sure where your confusion is. This is a complete conversion kit for the early rear soft window targa. This can replace any glass window at least up through 74. Sometime in the mid-70s Porsche stopped putting the socket stampings in the targa bar to mount the tension handles.
btw, the early factory manuals have sections related to conversion from SWT to glass. going the other direction is not too difficult. |
Jamie,
What all is involved in doing this to a later model Targa? Totally agree that this is the first time in YEARS that a complete kit has been available. The price is not cheap but on the other hand its AVAILABLE! Some of these parts have simply been unavailable in the past so personally am glad to see it happen. Joe A |
subscribed, I am thinking of doing this to my 71 E targa
|
soft window kit
the kit definitely fit up to 73 as the hard window is the same ans so is the later cars too , i think that the later car still have the hole stamped in the targa bar to hold the handles
the other thing needed for the later cars is the rear mounting plate , they are just like a small piece of angle to have the 3 rear mounting bolt attach as for price there is 2 kits available , basic and plus basic has 2 original handles, the 2 helical receiver, the targa bow, the 2 rear half bow, the side spacer and 3 rear special bolt , with all the bolt and a color instruction manual 1700$ cad or with a new window for 2200$ cad not included is : the seal , the tonneau cover and tenax fastener as they are readily available from numerous sources includung our host |
soft targa kit
Are you still selling whole soft targa kit as the chat shows. The complete kit with soft top is what I am interested in. The targa bar has the receivers (the black bolt on things with holes in them (I don't know if they are correct) and the sides are ready to receive the bolt on hoops. With the soft top and the bars and pieces, how much to San Diego? Do you give instructions with it on how to cut the vinyl targa cover (inside)? Check, PayPal, or what is payment mode?
Thanks, Fred Adler San Diego 1968 TARGA;) |
yes I make them , email sent
or e mail me at freezing914 at gmail dot com for more details |
