My rebuild is snowballing

My rebuild is getting away from me. I am spending way too much money.

I had the cams reground to 964, and now I want to have my cylinders bored to 98mm with JE pistons.

Tell me this is a bad idea or combination so I will stop.

It appears you have the "while I am in there" disease. I don't think there is a inexpensive cure. It is a slippery slope to massive spending. The only way to slow it down is stay STOCK, but that is no fun.

This is a classic case of "Murphy's Law"
The actual cost of construction (in this case,,,rebuild) will always exceed the estimate by a factor of 10!!
And....if by some chance you do come in under cost....there will always be 1 more thing to do, which will blow the budget.
Good Luck

Peppy,
Don't cheap out now...stay strong, stay committed...the rest of us will hate you if you exercise any fiscal restraint whatsoever....its only money.....:D

Mike (on a similar path to financial ruin)...

Ponder this: after all the money's gone, and your car is nicely finished with every last possible HP having been extracted...sitting pretty in the driveway with a gleaming new engine....and no money to gas it up...you can always sit in it and make vroom vroom noises....that's what I'm gonna do....;)

euro911sc 08-12-2008 04:17 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
:D:D:D :D:D:D

Its a slippery slope.... once you get the engine in order you will have to get the rest of the car up to handling the new power... did someone say brakes? Oh, you need bigger wheels to clear those larger calipers... um.. you need new adjustable shocks to handle the added unsprung mass and of course that means you need new torsion bars too... OMG honey, did you see the shape those bushings are in??? I need to write another check because I can't possibly drive the car like that! It is positively unsafe... Holy cow! do you see the size of that rock chip in the hood? That must have happened on the track out of #10. I have to get it painted... er... might as well throw in some lighter FG bumpers while I'm there, honey... um... yeah now I'm done!

not quite... Then it starts all over again... my instructor said he would promote me up one level
if I had a faster car... (this actually happened to me ;) ) so you go buy a shell and ... well... that's another story ;)

I was thinking resell value. If I cut corners (not replacing alusil cylinders) it will hurt the value of the car more than what it will cost to replace them.

SCrescue 08-13-2008 08:28 AM

Yep, keep telling yourself that.....it's not a lie if you believe it's true....;)

Elombard 08-13-2008 09:04 AM

dont forget the additional oil cooling capacity you will need...oh better go center mount...need a new bumper...gotta match the rear bumper...hey lets go wide body since we are doing bumpers ....really need a full re-paint because the paint wont match...oh yah $5K for wheels that look and act right on a widebody.....ahhhhhhh

It is meant to happen this way. If you would realize the final bill that you would spend before you started, you would never do it.:D

Our PP buddy, Steve Wilkinson, lurks around here so he may chime in since he wrote the bible on how to blow a small fortune on a used car. I just got done reading it a couple weeks ago and it's a hoot. The bottom line is that you'll NEVER get back the money you spend to modify any used car but particularly a Porsche. So it then becomes a question of how much you want the benefits of the modifications; is it worth it to you.

wow i feel for you. i really do. FISCAL RESTRAINT???? WTF is that?

lets see my leakdown on numero quattro is 19%. powers that be state about 25k more miles on it before it becomes mosquito fogger.

my dilemma is this.....................

since i never want to do this again , i figured we would split the cases, balance everything from clutch on, new rod bearings/bolts, etc. to showroom stock specs which we are, with no cheating allowed.

butt....................if my p & c's are shot at 122,000 +/- miles than we could go stock or euro P & C's............................................... ...or

be like jeremyd and hang the expense, slap it on the old visa card and when the FAT LADY PUKES we have an honest dynoed 3.4L with 287 TRUE PONY POWER w/ a chip and kiss showroom stock class goodbye.

and watch my g/friend faint when she sees the bill from patrick motorsports and every month write a HUGE CHECK to visa so as to obsolve my sins of owning a porsche and not being satisfied with stock horsepower!!!

yep fiscal restraint alright..............know it , live it, learn it.............with some other car.........not a porsche!

oh yeah i fergot to add new zoomy clutch/flywheel, all g-50 upgrades and taller 1 and 2 turbo gears, and a little LSD for good measure!

fiscal restraint???? WTF!

If it helps, if it ain't stock you limit your market appeal and thus your resale.

Also, if you mod it, you may end up in DE classes with much faster cars.

Make sure you do your 3.2 rod bolts, they are considered a week spot.

Also, w the C2 cams you may need better valve springs and or light weight retainers to make it right.

Good luck.

Go with a set of Mahle Max Moritz P&C's and make a 3.2 Short Stroke..seriously you won't regret the extra grand on the quality!
