959 Lights
I have just purchased a 959 in Germany which is being shipped to New Zealand at the moment. To pass inspection and register the car in NZ, I need headlights that dip to the left as NZ is a RH Drive (on left of road) country.
I have been quoted a pretty high price from Porsche and wondered if anybody had a second hand set or knew of an alternative. Let me know. Thanks, Mike ![]()

Part II - and you are surprised because....
I do not think that car is roadworthy for your country. I'll give you $50,000 as is.

Can they not just be re-aimed?

wouldn't it be just the lens that directs the beam? is the lens seperate from the rest of the light unit? can they be flipped over?

No.
Well they can be re-aimed, but not for left drive roadways. You MIGHT be able to get the beam to a somewhat acceptable spot, but then the high beams would be off in the ditch somewhere. And the lows would still blind others. If you have E code lights, drive up to a wall and notice how the beam kinda kicks up on the right/ditch area. That's so road signs get illuminated without blinding oncoming drivers. That would be near impossible to aim properly for those who drive on the other side. That "kick" would be directly in the eyes of other drivers. Its the same with all the Japanese imports that come over here of late. Their lights need to be replaced with LHD items. So, all the Skylines you see running around here are illegal unless they managed to find a source for LHD head lights. -kevin

Borrow a set and put the originals back after you pass.

In many countries, they simply mask the portion of the lens that creates the kicked up portion of the beam. You miht ask if that would be allowed. You could always mask the lenses on the inside, if they were worried about the masking being removed once the car was registered.

tough spot, passing headlights can be tough, i've worked at a japanese import lot here in canada, and we have to do headlight conversions, as you mentioned skylines are tough... we actually use honda accord headlights and they fit amazingly well.
if the price is over 1500 i would bet it is easier toretrofit something else..but that only get you passed the inspection for road use u'd still need to find something else.. seems to me like your only option is to fork out the $$

Obviously you move to a country that better suits your car. Where are your priorities?

I have space for it.....

OT, but your geographical details are intriguing...
Username "mikeh_hk" - the 'hk' often denotes Hong Kong, but prob not in this case? Your location is listed as "Mumbai, India", yet you're buying a car in Germany, to register in New Zealand. Cool! Would love to know what else you've got hiding in your garages (in India? in NZ? Elsewhere?)

Lived in Hong Kong for years and have permanent residency there but currently working in India. Actually a Kiwi originally and have home there so sending 959 there for holiday driving. Have had a number of Porsches but 968 ClubSport only other one at present. Roads in India so crap a total waste of time having a nice car here.
Thought someone might have alternative for lights but will have to sort it out. NZ tough on imports. Mike |

I though hk was for "hunter killer"? You can understand others on this board, you bought a car that is ridiculous in cost and to repair, why would you be concerned about the cost of headlights? What did Porsche quote for the head lights?

Because despite the costs they are a truly awesome car. Beg or steal a drive and see for yourself.
