All '76 vin #'s are 10 digits.

ROW cars are 9116300001-9116301868 coupes
9116310001-9116311576 Targa and sportomatic

Spell check?

If you'll post the serial number, we'll tell you exactly what it is.

The owner sounds like an idiot.

My 911 is a 1976 Euro model (non-sunroof). For all intents and purposes, it is basically the same as a US-spec 911S of the same vintage. The stock speedometer (still in my car) was a 250 kph VDO.

The engines were different in 1976 between, US and ROW cars. Guess who got the better one? Also, it could be a Carrera 3.0, which is an entirely different beast.

If it's not a Carrera 3.0, then the engines are essentially (almost exactly) the same. The Euro-spec engine was not "better" in any functional sense. Maybe a different part numbered fuel distributor or something, but functionally identical.

Can you get a pic of this car? How are the flares attached?

The ROW engine was rated 10 DIN hp higher than either of the US engines that year. Both the 49-state and California engines were rated the same, which I don't believe for a New York minute. Porsche often changed things in their cars that affected the power ratings, or weight, and kept the specs the same. In any case, a significant portion of the US cars that year were California emissions-equipped and those engines had the dreaded thermal reactors, which shortened the life of the engines considerably.

If you look at the torque curves of many of the comparable engines over the years, you'll notice that the peaks aren't all that different but the ROW engines usually had a lot more area under the curve, as their torques curves were much flatter. This is especially true of many of the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera engines.

Is it a 76 911 and not an (S). Reg 911 would be a 2.7 w/ 150HP, why not look for a good SC. Drive the car and see how it feels, also drive a nice SC. I think you will find a world of difference.

The '76 911 RoW engine (Type 911/81) was rated at 165 hp. Same as a US-spec 911S engine. I do not have any info here at work, but I am pretty sure that is correct. FWIW, the info I am referencing was per Bruce Anderson's books and the little "Tech Spec" book that I have for the car.

You know, I think you are right. They dropped the 911/42 engine when the Carrera 3.0 came out and basically did away with the 911S in Europe. All you could get was a plain 911.

Sorry for the confusion. My memory isn't what it used to be...
