all my gauges went dead for about a 5 minutes???

I went out for a drive, after about 10 miles, all 5 of my gauges were dead. This has never happen happen before. Then they came back on. Where do I start looking for this loose connection? Is there a relay to them? Its a 88 930 BTW.

Start with checking connections at the ignition switch/or ignition switch itself. Check that the "plug" is firmly on the socket behind the ignition. Check all other plugs you see under the dash.

I assume the car was still running when this happened so losing all of your gauges at once seems to be tied in to the ingnition switch circuitry (just a guess to get you started.) The good news is, if the problem is with the electrical part of the ignition switch, a new part is easily obtained--just plug and play. The bad news is, accessing the replacement is a total PITA.

Ossi,

Thanks. I'll check the Ignition switch. That's easy enough. What other plug(s) can be connected to all five gauges down there? Yeah, car was running. How hard is it to change that switch? Unscrew the plastic cap or ring and it falls out, right? Never done one.

Its a pain. You have to drill out the non-theft bald screws... When you get a new one, it should come with a new set of those with the tightening part on them. When you tighten it past torque the little bits break off and now you have a new set of bald screws installed so get it right the first time...

I'd look at the battery and the alternator connections first. A complete blackout sounds like a bad power connection to me.

Enjoy!
