Rubberized Underseal / under coat what has been done origanally?
 

Hi out there!

Now I almost finished all the welding of the chassis on my 911T '69. It's time to prepare the next step.
Parts of the chassis have been sanded back to bare metal and then sprayed with 2 component epoxy primer. My question is what is originally done....
after this epoxyprimer first a layer of rubberized underseal (stoneguard) from Wurth. Should this undercoat been sprayed in the original body collor (Bright Ivory) of the car? Or should the whole floor pan and and wheel arches be black? I looked into a lot of books, but I could not find the answer....

So what is the best way preserving this long term restoration project and/or what has been done originally in '69? All advice is more then welcome.

The undercarriage on my '74 was painted the same color as the exterior.

I can't give you the exact year the change occurred, but the under car was black, then body color (at least the wheel wells). This info resides on the Early S Registry. However, the schutz was a bone/gray color and painted over either with the black or other. They didn't have colored stone gaurd. You can buy black SG today.

All exposed undercar body parts were covered. The moving suspension parts were not covered. The gas tank was covered top and bottom and the trunk and rear bay got it too. Nothing inside the cabin, that had the tar stuff and sound pads. Your car had a band of SG along the rockers so that below the trim was pebbled. The very rolled lip of each wheel arch got some as well, about 3/8ths to 1/2" wide facing the tire only.

black paint over the Shutz stuff up to at least 1970 - body color starts at least as early as '73

Hmmm. This goes back to the "Factory Markings" and such I was harping about two days ago. My '68 had black paint covered by black undercoating covering the underbody. And from the condition the car was in, I'm pretty sure that was original.

use sks stoneguard better than rubber undercoat and very durable. then paint

I think the thread author is on to that, he just wanted to know how the cars were finished colorwise on the underside when they left the factory year by year.

Might I suggest posting that information here and suggesting this thread for the wiki? Or is there another thread already dealing with the application of factory-correct paint/protective coatings?
