Do I need the H4 Headlight Rings??
Guys,
I am going to swap out my H5's for H4's. Do I need to get the ring that covers the ring? See the pic with the arrow. Can someone give me a quick explain??

That cover ring is to paint to match your car you don't need it. The H4 bucket conversion will have a chrome ring or a black one, shown just behind the one you point to.

Do people paint the primered ring? It looks like it comes off like the outer ring?

Some people leave the black ring black. Depending on the color of the car, it looks cool. Some folks just like the chrome ring...I didn't on my car and bought some primer rings from another Pelican and rattle canned them with some custom mixed paint in a spray can. There's a shop near me that does that. You can take the black or chrome ring off, but it takes the whole thing apart that way.

The cover ring is sold extra along with the hollow bolt. If you like chrome, buy the H4's w/o the extras. Just remember that H5 rings don't work with H4's. The adjusters are what's different between H1's, H4's and H5's. All dedicated rings and the first 2 models came with chrome as stock. H5's and later sugar scoops came painted from the factory.

Also-if it's just the position of the adjustment holes that differ could you use an h5 ring on an h4 light and just take the ring off to adjust, as you could the h5, or does the ring actually retain the h4 to the car?

The H4 ring has screws through the ring and retained on the back side on the threads. It is part of the complete ass'y. Same with the H1, except it has 4 screws, 2 more than the H4. The H5 has little rubber plugs to access the adjusters. The is little likely hood that you can swap these around, but some people do clever things.

I initially took mine apart and painted the primed ring and resembled using some crimpy long nut things I picked up at lowes.
Here are a couple thread on the matter: Euro H4 picture request New H4's --- paint the rings? And after a while I put the additional rings on. I figure it make repainting a bit easier so why not.
