Unused Depression

Any ideas what the area (highlighted by the green box) is for in the early cars? I've seen the booster mounted in that area in some later cars, but not in anything as early as my '68.

Okay, okay. Either there's a mass conspiracy to keep me in the dark about this dang depression or no one here knows what the heck it's for. As I'm a trusting individual, I'm guessing it's the latter . . .

uneven areas give strength to sheet metal and prevent resonances

your depression may just be an epi-phenomenon

and, I would not assume that a 4 hour wait on a weekend means nobody knows an answer...

This does not appear to be an area simply there to lend strength, and the reason I only waited four hours to bump it up is because I was in the garage beating a replica piece to weld in and didn't really feel like doing it if it's unnecessary. However, it's about finished so it looks as though it's going in regardless of its purpose.

BTW, in case you're wondering why I'd be replacing such a good looking piece of metal, this picture is not my car . . . thanks to Bob Tilton for letting me steal this fine example . . .

Actually, from the amount of holes in the original piece I was thinking it was some sort of special-order water feature.

The "supporting tube for steering" (per the Porsche parts book) goes there on early cars. I don't have a close up shot, but you can kinda see it in the picture. For the second Porsche item today (also 3 bolt lower a-arm mounts), I don't know when this changed or why it went away.

Great! Thanks for the help, Rich, that's the kind of answer I was looking for. They must not have changed the tooling when they discontinued the piece. I'm going to go ahead and put it back in for booster/mc mounting purposes.
