3.2 engine cutting out

Hello,

I have a friend with a 3.2 euro spec motor with the following problem, all help appreciated.

regards

Johnny B

"I have a 1984 European spec 3.2 Carrera. About 1000 km ago the car suddenly cut out as I stopped at a toll booth and although the motor would swing it refused to start. I climbed out to check that the fuel pump relay was correctly seated as it has happened to me before that the relay comes loose on a bumpy road. The relay and the fuel pump fuse both checked out OK and when I climbed back in after maybe a minute the car started fine. A similar thing happened to me about 600 km later, but this time I left the car for about a minute and it then started fine. In the last incident the car almost died as I came to a stop at a traffic light but I managed to blip the accelerator before it died. This has happened twice over the last few days.

In all instances the car has been at normal operating temperature and the problem has only been experienced at idle. Apart from this the car runs normally, no back firing or miss fires. Spark plugs were changed about 6000 miles ago."

First thing I would be replacing is the DME relay located under the driver's seat next to the DME. Probably still has the original relay in the car.
