shifter knob removal???
How do you get the shifter knob off an 87 911 Carrera,I cant find it in any of my books and I dont wanna break it.thanks,john

G50 Trans I assume.
Carefully pry up the shift pattern cap - dont break the tabs. That reveals the allen nut that needs to be removed. Then it just pulls off.

Don't know if it's the same, but with my 72 shifter, the knob is only held on by a crush washer - it just pulls off, as I discovered one day at the track...

The G50 trans (`87-89) does not use a crush washer like older cars.
If you break one of the prongs on the cap you can order them from our host for less than two bucks (ask me how I know). The real expense is if you damage the leather on the shift knob while trying to pry off the cap. After that you are home free.

Actually, mine just unscrewed ... I just turned the knob, the bolt stayed stuck to it for whatever reason, and the whole thing came off without ever popping off the cap.
Turned myself a nice replacement wood knob ... cheap and just what I like.

If it's the same as my G50, pop the shift patern button on the top, you will see the big bolt in there. Take that big bolt off, it's off.
