Car coming out of 2 year storage

Hi everyone,

My dad has had his '88 911 in storage for 2 years due to unfortunate circumstances and I don't believe it has been started up in that time.

I was wondering what checks and replacements should we go through before we start it up and drive it home (I bet you are thinking to yourself "it ain't gonna be driving anywhere" ;-))

Apart from the drain and refil of fuel tank, new fuel filter, oil filter, check fuel lines, charge battery, brake fluid, what else would you reccomend we do..

My dad is very stobborn when it comes to cars and would no doubt just try starting it and see what happens.

Thanks for your help

There are lots of threads on this subject. You should do a search.

At a minimum, the experts seem to recommend:

1. Draining and replacing fuel and fuel filter.
2. Draining and replacing oil and oil filter.
3. Checking (and likely replacing) brake lines.
4. Checking fuel lines.
5. Checking (and likely replacing) tires.

Some people suggest putting a few tablespoons of oil or Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders through the spark plug holes to ensure proper lubrication on start-up. Others go so far as to say that once you put the oil into the top of the cylinders, you should rotate the engine by hand a few times before trying to start it.

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Hi Scott,

Sorry about that, I will do a search now - I hope there aren't too many threads about, these cars don't deserve to be put in storage :-)

Hopefully fuel lines will be OK as he had them all done 2 years ago, but then again I believe they can become very fragile when not started for a while.

Hopefully we will be picking it up soon, rather than putting it off for another year.

I just hope rust or general not being used will have caused permanent damage to the engine as it was going strong..

I love reading about the heating system mysteries on here, we could never get the car to stop blowing hot

Thanks for your reply

Spark plugs should be changed too.
