motorpower 911 roll-bar?
I have someone in the area selling a motorpower 911 roll-bar out of an '86 cab. Anyone know anything about these roll-bars? I would like to buy it but can't find a lick of information on it. He said it was 2.5-3.5 inches in diameter and it sounds like it bolts to the floor.
Any ideas? |

I have a full auto power cage in my sc, It works but I have defiately seen nicer. It will bolt to the floor, which is not the preferred method, however , better than nothing in a rollover. My cage also pinches in at the front floor, and is somewhat uncomfortable, but this should not be an issue with just a rear bar. good luck

Autopower is about the bottom rung for roll bars/cages. They are designed to be easily bolted and unbolted from the car, meaning they do not fit very tight against the body structure. Bars that fit tight are difficult to get through the doors. If you upgrade someday to a full cage, a car with an Autopower cage will be more difficult to enter/exit than most others.
It is also far less desirable to bolt to the sheet metal floor as opposed to higher quality bars that bolt or weld to the solid structure of the longitudinals. While I'm sure that an Autopower bar is far better than nothing in case of a roll-over, I went with a custom-welded cage for my track toy that fits very tight to the body structure. |

I'm currently working on fitting an Autopower bolt in bar (a gift) into my 86 Cab. The directions(one paragraph say it can be installed over or under carpet but over didn't seem like it would look or fit well so I've got the back sections of the interior out and will probably finish installation during this week.
I have other cars with full cages welded in and probably won't use the Cab. at track days often but with the conv. I'll feel safer with at least the bolt in bar and will then be able to install real harnesses. I'll post back here after installation is finished. ![]() |

The Autopower bolt in roll bar took 5 hours to install without any help. I'm picky so it could be done quicker if ya just eyeball it up and start drilling. The limited directions are of no help to anyone who's got a clue and reads as follows.
Your new roll bar isdesigned to mount on the floor behind the front seat and brace to the fender wells. It may be mounted above or below the carpeting. If you are going to install a padding kit it will be advantageous to mount under the carpet to allow extra clearance for the top. Remember that you are working with non critical areas of the body, minor gaps and pressed body ribs will be taken up in tightening the plates. If the bar has removable braces, mark them right and left and remove them. If not it may be necessary to remove the front seats to enter the bar.If the bar is to mount on the wheel well and the well is covered with other than carpet or vinyl mat those other coverings will have to be removed. When this is accomplished , set bar in and center. Using bar as a template, drill one hole through each of two mounting pads. Place bolts in these holes to hold barin place and drill other holes. Place bolts through all holes and slide on backing plates from beneath car.Fasten plates in place with two nuts per bolt. Seats can be installed and trim panels over the wells andalong sides that interfere with bar can betreimmed to fit and replaced. My experience, In an 86 cab the front seats can be left in during the install. The rear tires do not need to be removed however you will need to raise the car to get room to tighten the bolts in the wheelwell and to prevent accidently drilling through a tire. The rear seatbacks will no longer be able to fold up and down so choose which way you want them before final bolting. The speaker panels that cover the side wheelwell area have to be modified. You will need one longer bolt to pull the backing plates in so you can get the nuts for the bolts provided started. The backing plates for the support struts are flat from the factory and have to be curved to match the countour of the wheelwell. I used my bench vice and a BFH. They have 4 mounting holes but only 3 can be used. (probably a common bracket they weld on many different bars) The mounting/backing plates will crush the floor ribs flat as you tighten the plates, make sure you have a long ratchet or an air ratchet or you'll get tired. The bar comes finished in a cheap black industrial paint thats just to prevent rust during shipping storage etc. so once you've got the whole thing installed you can take it back out to paint or paint it first and be really carefull not to scratch during install. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I installed a cab autopower roll bar in my 87 targa, tight fit but can be done. I also had a local metal shop construct backing plates for the under side of the floor pan and the wheel wells. It looks clean and neat and when you are tightening down the roll bar it gives a nice solid plate of steel rather then sheel metal to tighten against
