Question for the antipodeans in the crowd
 

This is a question for all of the antipodeans out there, mainly the Aussies...

I'm in Los Angeles at the mo, but will most likely be moving (back) to Perth in a few months (wife's from there, I'm Canadian... long story).

The plan is to stick my beloved 1980 SC in a container and bring it back with me.

I, like probably everyone else on this forum, have two lists of things for the car - 'Nice to have', and 'Need to fix'. Unfortunately it's been hard to get to many of the things on list #1, because list #2 keeps on growing on its own :)

So while I'm already assuming that parts (and labour, and pretty much everything else) will be more expensive down there, I'm wondering if you feel there are certain parts that are outrageous compared to the US, and so would recommend doing or buying before I leave?

In all honesty the car's isn't really in need of too much - I've been toying with replacing the trombone (but it never really overheats), putting in an alarm/central locking (but I want to wait til it's in Oz and get an immob), putting in the engine soundpad... Pretty minor stuff really.

Well you have the most expense part...THE SC !!.

You are correct that parts arnt't cheap here. Things like motors, motor components and gearbox's are much cheaper and obviously more common in the US. Little parts can always be ordered in the US and shipped back.

You are heading to perth at the right time....beautiful weather and easy living in summer..

I would suggest that if you are going to put your car in a container get a 40ft one you can then fit three SCs in there and a couple of spares.

In reality i would suggest that you pick up a spare motor and gear box as you may need them and if not you can sell them and make a nice profit.

+1 on both of the above! Buy as much stuff as you can afford and if you don't need it I can assure you it will be snapped up on Ebay probably for a tidy profit! Just have a look at Ebay Australia and see how much Porsche stuff is available and at what cost and you will get a fair idea of what I am saying.

With Perth's summers cracking 40C (whats that about 110F??) reasonably regularly you might want to re-think the carrera oil cooler !

Brake discs are much more expensive over here, well they are for my car and expensive to ship from the US. I say rule of thumb is to assume it will be much more in Oz as it more than likely will be.

+1 on what's been said so far. I will only add that you should probably concentrate on bringing large and/or heavy stuff which would otherwise cost too much to ship. On my last trip to the US I brought back my M&K - very happy I did!

Oh and welcome to Oz! It's a great place, you won't want to leave. I came to Brisbane on a 2 month project and have now been here 10 years :)

won't the steering wheel be on the wrong side?

it seems like every old part that i sell on ebay goes to austrailia - what is going on down there? are they porsche crazy or is the dollar so weak that our parts are cheap?
