Question Holy Moly!

After replacing starter, battery and terminals in a recent redo myself. I turn the key and Thawp,Thawp,Thawp. I have the car on the jackstands with the starter side much higher. Would this lean angle cause this starter noise? thanks Roger.

No reason for it. You either have the starter in wrong or bad connections.....btw what does "Thawp" refer to?

Thawp, for a lack of a better noise is what the rotating engine is making on the starter side. Engine turns easily enough with exception of this miscue. thanks Roger. 1977 911S

The old starter was fine but a little sluggish. When I pulled the unit the solenoid was cracked, but continued to engage. I decided to renew starter to battery as a refurbishing. thanks Roger

Sounds like the gear might be the wrong one. Pull it our and compare it to your old one.

signature65, When you say the wrong the gear. Do you that mean the number of splines on drive gear? This is the problem. I bought the starter a month ago from PP and already mailed in the core. thanks Roger.

Did you make all the right connections? Battery wire, red power wire to engine compartment, 2 yellow wires to engine compartment? I have an SC so the wires might differ slightly...

Best regards,

Michael

Quick follow up. After looking at the receipt, starter noted as 911-604-101-AX-M14 for 1972-89. All info on car discription is correct with the exception of engine. The car is a 2.7. Does is this make a difference? thanks Roger

Wiring on bosche solenoid are center lug for battery and alternator. yellow female spade 50 and the other large lug is for ground to starter. When I cranked the car I was alone. Next time will bring other half to turn the key while under for car for closer inspection. thanks Roger

if you got the starter from PP there should not be a problem. I have seem replacement starters where the starter gear that spins the flywheel is the wrong one. Makes a horrible clack clack clack. Similar to the sound a starter will make when the car is running and you try to engage the starter.

Question Darren and etal

Quick questions? Is there any wiggle room if you loosen both allen nuts and rotate starter for proper engagement? If not, will pull starter to to check for marring on flywheel. I called PP and quickly received return auth. no., but would like to bench test before shipping. How long should the throw of the starter be for engagement? thanks Roger

Roctor, another starter problem? In violation of the holy grail of don'ts
or are you still working on the previous one?

To crustychief. This is a by-product of part#1. With engine in 4th gear, I can spin the wheel through with no probliem by hand. No funky sounds even with plugs in. Now the focus on proper starter engagement. thanks Roger

Speaking of an odd starter noise, never had a problem with it till today, it cranks and fires the engine fine but at the starting point i release the key and the stater stops the engagement, then it lets out low moan sound, very brief, at the store it did the same thing and now it has left. Is this an indication of worse thing to happen? Any thing i could address now to prevent a problem down the road, the least 6 starts have gone normal? Sorry to get off topic but it may be all related.
