911SC Window Regulator
So, the other day my window on my passenger side just fell down into the door.
After pulling the door apart this is what I found.....can you ID the problem? So, anyway, I obviously need to replace the part. From what I read I need to use a newer style. Is this going to be a pain? Also, how do you get the window out when it is already resting on the bottom? The Bentley book states that you should keep it halfway up....clearly not an option. t. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I just had mine fixed by someone who knew what they were doing because getting it apart is a royal PITA. Your problem looks similar to mine.
There is a "channel" with a rubber strip bottom that the glass sits in. This channel collects water that runs down the outside glass. The metal eventually crumbles because "RUST NEVER SLEEPS," and the motor is strong enough to crumple the mess up when it weakens. The good news is the regulator, while probably bent, can also probably be straightened, greased and made serviceable. The motor is probably O.K. since it boogered the mess in the first place, but you test that on the bench before it goes back in. Further good news, the channel isn't that expensive (compared to a new motor or a regulator). To disassemble, note the motor separates from the regulator inside the door. Otherwise you will wrestle with it for days breaking other stuff, like delicate wire ends, glass, etc. Jagged rusty parts lurking in the dark will cut you, necessitating a tetanus booster. Recommend you notch a 1"x2" and prop the glass up and out of the way. Oh, and a falling window acts much like a gillotine when your paw is where it shouldn't be. Don't ask why I am so wise. While I enjoy working on my car ('82 SC), in the end, a good mechanic knows when to call in a pro. Let's face it grubbing out a power window isn't as sexy as, say, timing your camshafts. |

Thanks for the response.
Due to your input and my wifes confidence in me, I am scheduling this with my local trusted wrench! t.

I'd say it's money well spent, although others here would disagree. And you've already saved some $ by disassembling the side of the door. That's what I did.
Also found the driver door regulator to be in similar disrepair, although still functioning. Much easier to fix before it gets all tangled up. I'm guessing about 1 1/2 hours of shop time plus parts per door. Good luck! |
