Exciting New Pelican Feature - Need Feedback...

Hey guys. In the never-ending effort to improve the site and provide as much information to you guys, I have come up with an idea to expand upon our current catalog. Recalling back to my days at Hughes Aircraft, we used to have data sheets on every part that we bought and/or sourced for the satellites that we worked on. Well, I thought that maybe this wasn't a terribly bad idea for the various parts that we sell. With the advent of electronic databases, a lot of this information is locked away and not readily accessible.

Hence, introducing the concept of the Pelican Parts Info page. This will be a page that will popup when you click on 'more info' in our catalog. It will contain all the images we have, part number information, what makes / models the part fits, and any other information we can gather up from the archives. I had Eugene layout a mockup of the page, here's the link:

I think it's very clear.
question: on the images tab, I see a bucnh of imges. Will they be links to bigger image or that is it?

On the first page, if you rollover "Zimmerman", a small popup will appear. If there are smaller images like that on the page, then when you rollover them, a similar popup will appear with a larger-sized image.

Thanks a LOT for this feature. It is extremely helpful to have the additional details to determine if the correct parts are being ordered.

It has some similarities to other specialized sites I've used for electronics and electromechanical components and equipment for my work.

But there appears to be an issue when loading the page using Mozilla Firefox. IE loads the page and images just fine, but Firefox gives a "cannot find image" error for the tab labels and the illustrations. Not a big deal, as this is a 'pre-beta' sample test page, but I thought you might want to know.

same problem on my computer with Mozilla Firefox. I can't even see the pictures.

I think the idea is great, i know it will be lot's of work on your end to get that all
set up, but it will make live easier with parts ordering.

How about some technical hints and specs on some parts, Like tourque specs for fasteners or lubrication and maintenance hints. Also Min. dimension like on clutch and brake parts.

The firefox thing is a server config problem with the temp directory - not to worry about.

As for torque specs, etc - too much work involved with that. We're just trying to better display what we have right now, not create new work...

Hey Wayne,

It is a definite improvement for those of us who are learning (hopefully) and are not professional Porsche autotechs.

What would also be a fantastic addition in that it would be a great help to customers in buying the right parts, and it would be a insightful business move would be to have a link for partial and complete kits you have put together for various projects. It is sometimes very difficult to determine what parts are needed until the car is dismantled. Then one has to go back and order more parts while the car sits. Also, for other projects it is difficult to determine what parts should be replaced. For example, how many and which fuel lines should be replaced? What are all the parts which should be replaced in doing a complete brake job? Etc. Complete kits put together by PP would make many projects that some of us are holding of on far less intimidating. (There have been a few posts which asked if PP could make up complete kits of braided stainless steel fuel lines. Any news on this Wayne?)

Finally, thanks for not being satisfied with your wonderful site and always trying to creatively improve it. We appreciate it and enjoy it.

Hey Wayne,

Yes, those gasket kits look great. After a few weeks of working on this project in the evenings, I still can't figure out how many fuel lines I should order to redo all of them. I'm certain that this is true of many people on many different projects. (This would be especially helpful with projects that have a lot of pieces that a DIYer can tackle. Those who are rebuilding engines usually (hopefully) know what they are doing.) I teach philosophy and logic in a university, so I am not completely stupid, but the problem is that one really doesn't know what they are getting into until the project is done! If I only could watch the project carried out on someone else's car, I would be qualified. Complete kits, from those who know, along with a link or two to tech articles, would be invaluable beyond belief.

The other day, my girlfriend, while observing me turn on my computer in the morning was laughing, and said that I am more interested in checking out new messages on Pelican Parts than I am to read an email from my stock broker! The people involved with Porsche, and all things Porsche always give me great joy! It's a good group. (Whenever I tinker on my car, I think of Warren.)
