New guy intro

Hi Folks,

Am finally getting around to my first post. Am a recent lurker and a first time owner who also signed on to rennlist this year. Realized the dream almost 2 months ago with the purchase of an '87 Targa Carrera 3.2 from a fellow pelicanite, and I drove her home from Alabama to Pa.

She drives well and is in great shape, the PO did right by all accounts. I am picking up where he left off by providing some maintenance and TLC. I'm not in the trade, but might be able to pull off some 3-mechanics level (reference to Wayne's book) stuff - only limits are money, tools and time - what else is new.

I've already had her inspected for PA (emissions), but am waffling on insuring for street or collectible. I may be driving her more once I take care of the fuel line as a preventive measure. She has an M&K Muffler with a Fabspeed Cat Bypass and a Steve Wong Chip. I had the rear rotors replaced, an LOF, and a trans fluid replacement. Clutch, PP, TOB, and valve adjustment were done by PO.

I replaced the fan belt, bought some interior trim pieces, and ordered some stuff from our host and other places so I can do some light maintenance in the Fall (Fuel line parts, dizzy and rotor, magnecors), and maybe do some detailing. Someday I'd love to do the shocks/struts and brake lines, and get to a DE.

I've already been reading the posts and reviewing the tech support pages like a kid in a candy shop, and I love reading about the stuff that comes up and how to solve the problems. Thanks for readin'.

Welcome, beautiful car! Venetian blue is one of my favorites.

Thanks gents, I appreciate it - it's really an awesome site here.

petrolblue83911 - the interior code is HS (haven't found it yet), but the dash and trim are dark blue, and the seats and carpet are grey. Not sure if it's 'marble', natural, or even linen. Here's a pic from the PO, but the color is darker in the pic.

Looks great, welcome aboard.

I'm curious what attracts new buyers to these cars. Could you post your age and what compelled you to by an air cooled 911?

I'm sure there are lots of threads on this one. For me; 36, wanted one since I was about 12.

Cheers,

Paul.

Welcome and congratulations on your new Targa. Very nice color. Have fun with the learning curve and don't forget to wash it once a day. (Okay, maybe once a week.) SmileWavy

Thanks Ed - she does need a bath.
daepp - why?
The truth, and not to be a smart-ass.... = $.
They were 30K new when all I could afford was 5. So I am delayed-new.

The attraction was always there in other words. I always liked the look when I was younger and didn't realize they were air-cooled and couldn't afford them anyway. Later when I did and could, I settled on the 87-89's because they were the last of the breed - and I still don't have the resources or patience to devote to the earlier ones, although I think the 70's MYs were the first to catch my eye.

That and the name Targa just sounds cool. ;)

You?

PM me if you wanted more.

I've had my Targa since I was 40 - about 4 years now.

What I find interesting is how unfamiliar (dare I say uncaring) about Porsches the 16-20 year old guys we know are. I get a lot of thumbs ups etc when I drive my early 911, but almost never by any guy under 40. About the only exception are kids with VW Bugs. I get more respect picking up my kids at the all boys high school when I show up in a midsized Lexus than in my 911!

When I was in high school (78-81) the 911 was iconic!

BTW - my apologies for kijacking the thread.

Welcome - and I love your car!

Welcome!

Where in SE PA? I can point you to some good local resouces depending on your location.

Hobby Logger 09-08-2008 09:50 AM

Welcome and enjoy the car.

randytrish 09-08-2008 10:03 AM

Welcome Dan,
Very nice Targa. I'm also new new to Porsche ownership for mainly the same reasons you are. I started with a '75 S targa. I figured it was one of the simplest to learn to work on.
In reference to your insurance, I have liability, comp and collision coverage with a company named Safeco under a classic car policy. It's around 400 annually with no driving restrictions.
Randy
