911S 2.7S engine horsepower 74-77

Needed some help, what is the horsepower rating difference between the 74 & 76 Porsche 911 2.7S engines? One report I've read shows the early 1974 2.7S rated at 175.4 hp and the 1976 2.7S at 165 hp. Also any problems with the two years i need to be aware of. In the process of wanting to buy one or the other to install in a Porsche 914. Thank you for your help..Roy

Essentially you are correct. 175 for the 1974 and 165 for the 1976. The difference - off the top of my head - is probably the better exhaust setup on the '74.

In your application, the horsepower difference is going to small. I would pick the engine that is in the best shape.

Thanks for the info., again it boils down to the better engine for investment purposes. I have been reading that the 2.7L possibly wasn't as reliable as some of the other 911 engines but i plan on readjusting the valves, replacing valve covers with turbo covers, replace plug wires with stainless steel ground type, upgrade to 911 6-spring clutch..anyhow thanks for the advice. I would rather be going with a 3.0L or a 3.2L or 3.6L but the cost is over my head..thanks Roy

Whichever motor ran in a cooler climate and for less miles would "tend" to be better although all the normal leakdown, compression checks, headstud issues would prove it. I believe the '76 had the exhaust pump and thermal reactors so they did run hotter.
A well cared for or refreshed 2.7 is a good motor depending on price, my '74 rips.

I'd prefer a '74 2.7 to any other. The reliability issues are valves guides and head studs. Those are fairly straightforward to take care of. If the miles are low and it was well cared for, the P&C's can be used again (provided they're Nikasil's). P & C costs for 3.0 and greater and huge. Costs of machine work on a 2.7 case is minor in comparison.

Plus you save a few pounds
