Depend on what your daily driving is.

Heavy stop and go traffic and/or hot weather will get tedious and uncomfortable.

Short trips(< 15 minutes), will wear on the car and not allow you any real fun, as the car will always be too cold to really rock.

But if you have a nice commute with open windy roads that let's the car warm up... you'll be driving to work on your days off.

I think it will all come down to your available time, patience level and ultimately your wallet. Sure you can drive one as a DD but all SC-Carrera owners are reminded daily that these cars are OLD.

You can buy a 10K mile garage queen for $40K and you'll still need to keep up with maintenance for issues that will pop up: CV joints, bearings, worn rubber bushings, electrical issues (just do a search on AC, headlight relay, footwell blower issues etc). Rubber seals, wires, electrical connections, fuel lines, hoses, get old and worn out.

So if you have the money to buy a good example with strong records and a mint PPI, do it. If you have the time to repair it when you have an issue and the patience to deal with it when your DME relay shuts down or fuel pump craps out and leaves you on the side of the road, then yes you can do it. Just keep your back up car's battery charged and readily available!

Thanks for all the replies guys.

My commute is around 40 miles round trip. There is almost no stop and go traffic and things flow between 40-80mph. While my 04 325i is a nice ride I really miss having a classic sports car.
The other day I talked to a guy who parks in my garage and has a '73 914 which he has been commuting since it was new. That's 35 years and the car still look and sounds new with 300K+ on the clock. I actually considered buying a 914 and sliding in a 3.2l 911 engine from Motor Meister until I found all the bad threads about them on this site. I figured for the cost of converting the 914 I could pick up a 87-89 911.

Thanks for all the good information

Tony

I did it for years ('87 cab and '88 coupe) but got tired of having to scramble around on weekends to finish up DIY projects. Finally wife put her foot down and I got a new Audi A4 as a DD. This makes projects FAR less stressful and the a/c blows the Porsche's away, so to speak. I'm in Dallas but from Tulsa...trust me, you'll want good a/c so either upgrade the Porsche or be prepared to sweat! I will say though that having the A4 has resulted in my rebuild taking much, much longer than expected.
This is not an indictment against the older Porsches, it's simply a fact of life when you drive an older performance car. The other option is rent a car and pay a Porsche shop to do all the repairs, or have a reliable back up car.

I have an '87 and while I've driven it to work (17 miles ea. way, northern NJ) more than a few times, I wouldn't use it as a DD for several reasons:

It is a 20 year old car, with many original components. Yes, it is a very well-engineered car, and Porsche components are reliable, but things wear out with age. (Don't we all?)

Winter weather here is not great for this type of car.

The roads are crowded. Esp. with people talking on cell phones as they drive and/or overly agressive drivers. An accident seems inevitable and Porsches are not cheap to fix.

Road construction exists, along with construction vehicles. Rock chips in the body & windshield happen.

A track car sees a lot of stress. Things break. Imagine a Sunday flogging the car at a track and having to drive that same car on Monday.

A well set-up track car may not all that comfortable/functional on public roads due to suspension settings, ground clearance, etc.

My car will probably never be a high-value collector's item, or a show car, but daily driving takes its toll, and I want to keep the car looking as good as possible for as long as possible. But my car is black, which means it shows any grime, rock chips, etc. - if it wasn't black I might have a slightly different view.

Even if I did use the 911 as a DD, I'd still want/need a backup car. I would also need a backup car for sometimes hauling stuff and/or people.

Tony,

For some inspiration, here is what I did this summer with my DD 3.2. No problems whatsoever.

Matt

That looks like an awesome trip!

I just did a 2000 mile trip in my 1963-68-86-2000 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a 2000 Vortec drive train with no issues. So.. I am certainly not afraid to take the old iron out on the road :)

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Nice interior.

My 930, which happens to be my daily driver, looks the same.

If you buy one in good condition, I don't see why not.
They're pretty reliable cars - the key is to get a good PPI.
I have an '86 with the old 915 and I drive it in Los Angeles traffic quite a bit.
The A/C after a re-charge was fine this summer.

OKC is hot, hot, hot in the summertime with no or marginal A/C. During the spring, fall and the mild parts of the winter, it would be great though. Crossing through the city on I-40 in a 911 would be torture though.
