This is just an idea (keep in mind I am a noob). Maybe you are nicking reverse? Try adjusting your shift linkage.

Agree. Nicking reverse.
Do you have a short-shift kit installed?

Would you be nicking reverse when shifting INTO 5th? Not sure but on my shifter there is a spring loaded rocking arm on the 5th/reverse side that will click past the shift rod. Mine just started doing it after adjusting the coupler so I asked here "Click" when putting into reverse - normal? if it was normal. Not sure but it seems like thats what it is there for.

definitely not hitting reverse, happens going into 5th as well as out. I can coast down the road with the clutch in and move the shifter in and out of fifth from the neutral plane and I can hear it.

Maybe your shifter is dry? Could it be something about not having enough grease on the parts? Is it coming from the transmission? Maybe it is something with the spring loaded mechanism itself.
