911 Shift Rod Adjustment...

I posted some threads a few months back regarding replacing the shift rod coupler bushings in my '83 911SC. Some very good information was posted and I was able to replace the bushings in the coupler with polyurethane bushings from Pelican Parts. Unfortunately I tore my Achilles tendon right off of the heel bone playing soccer so I was never able to work on the car and/or re-install the coupler for almost 3 months now. I finally re-installed the shift rod coupler this afternoon but I cannot seem to get the shift rod adjustment correct. Everything I have read indicates that there should be some play in the rod and coupler with the shifter in 5th gear. No matter what adjustment I try, there is never any play when the shifter is in 5th gear. As a matter of fact, if the pre-load is not correct it will not go into all of the gears anyway. Right now, it shifts equally well into every gear including reverse. I had not yet road tested the car. Perhaps the new, tight, round hole (not the D-shaped stock holes) bushings will not allow any play? Any advise or input? Thanks in advance...

I have never noticed any play in 5th gear. The shift lever is spring loaded toward the 3/4 plane. In 5th the shift lever has a gate that keeps it from moving to the left. The spring pressure against the gate keeps you from having any slop.

You need to put the tranny in third and adjust the linkage so the shift lever is in the 3/4 plane and forward the correct amount (judge it by looking at the lower part of the shift lever). The 3/4 plane is to the right just where you meet resistance from the spring for the 5/R plane.

Once you have it where you think it should be based on the above, shift it a few times and look to see if the shifter needs to be more forward or more aft in 3rd and 4th gears. Make a second adjustment on the for/aft position if required.

I assume you have read the adjusting procedure here?

This has always worked for me.
