Are these Rims to Close to the Fender

Hi Folks,

I recently got wheels back from Trudesign wheels. I don't have any tires mounted on them yet so it is hard to tell, but the rims look like the offset may be a little to great. Can you tell me if you think these are too tight. With the tire on where should the top of the tire sit in relation to the fender.

Both the fronts and the back appear to be right about at the same spot. I am worried when the tires go on that they will stick out past the fenders.

Here's the front:

And the rear:

Is the suspension under load? Jack up the control arms until the car just starts to lift. I think they may tuck in some more with suspension travel. Also, do you have all the neg. camber you are planning on running?

+1. You may be fine. It's all about the negative camber you run. I wouldn't make any decisions until you have the tires on the car and the car on the ground.

Look about the same as my 9.5" rears that Jim built for me shown here with 245/45-16 tires. I think that he got the offset wrong by about a 1/2" or so. There is some minor rubbing if I compress the suspension enough but not so much as to damage the tire. a little more negative camber would probably cure the problem and maybe I'll trim/roll the lips for more clearance.

I think they'll be ok. What size tires are you planning on running?

Also, do you know what he used for offset and backspacing on the front wheels? I used the specs from OEM 9x16 Fuchs (138mm backspacing to extreme edge of wheel lip) for the front wheels and they work fine, no rubbing at all. Mine sit pretty much where yours do, perhaps mine are a wee bit inside the fenders a little more.

The rears look like they will be fine. If you go with a 315 width rear tire you may have to roll the fender lips or add some more negative camber.

Hi Scott,

I am not sure what he used for offset and backspacing though I can measure it tomorrow. In terms of tires I had read the thread on your car. From what I have seen I thought for 9 and 11's that 245/40 and 315/35 was the most common. Please correct me if I am wrong. Would it help if I went a bit smaller for both to make them tuck in? Keep in mind that I haven't had an alignment yet so I think the fronts have virtually no camber on them (in fact at times they look like they have a bit of positive camber which obviously wouldn't help me.) I plan on adding some camber to both the front and back. Any suggestions on what is typical for street use.

Dennis,

The tires sizes people use on 9&11x17 wheels are all over the place. Yes most people use a 315/35 tire on the rear.

I use 255/40-17 and 275/40-17 tires. Originally I was going to use 235/40 front tires but decide against it as I thought the size mismatch would be too great vs. the 275/40 rear.

I chose the 275/40 rear tires because I felt they would be more than enough tire for my 3.2 car, and it is.

Tire sizes on these cars really are a matter of personal preference and of course partly depend on the intended usage of the car.

Good luck with your project. It looks like you're creating a very nice car!

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the feedback. What did you use for camber on the front and the back on your car? Also what will be its main usage street or track.

Also how big is the lip under your fenders, I found that mine is probably 3/4 of an inch, whereas by dad's 88 has very small lips on the fenders. Keeping in mind that my fenders are add on's and his factory.

Thanks for the comments on the car. I have been watching the thread on your backdate for a while now and love how it is coming along.

I'm not 100% sure what my camber is but I think it's -0.75 front -1.75 rear. Once I rebuild my suspension I'll get my car corner balanced and aligned and will have a better idea at that point.

My car is primarily a street car. I do plan on attending some upcoming auto-x's and next year may jump into a few DE events. For the most part though it's a fun street car.

You'll never know until you put the car on the ground with the tires mounted.

245 & 315 should not be a problem with the right wheels backspacing.

Are you using spacers? That would allow you to play some in & out and do some fine tuning.

The fronts backspacing appears a little short on the picture... Can't see the back ones.

No spacers on either the front or the back. I have my figures crossed that the wheels will tuck up under them. If not I will have to send them back I guess. Plan on getting some wheels this weekend so we will see then.
