Noise From Cooling Fan ?
I think that’s where the noise is coming from. It sounds like the fan is rubbing against the housing. Is it my imagination?? Can I actually see the fan moving up and down?? I could prove my hypothesis by disconnecting the fan belt and running the engine for a short duration to see if the noise stops...RIGHT??
Question 1. What's the trick to removing the fan belt? Simply un-bolt the pulley? Question 2. If this is the sourc e of the noise, what's the solution? Bearings? New alternator? ![]()

Sounds like classic symptoms of alternator bearing failure. Lots of threads on this.
If you're going to run the car without the belt (and I would not recommend that you do do), only do it for a few seconds. Good luck!

Hi Larry,
You could go right here to find out about fan belt removal - I had to change mine on the second day of ownership. Keep track of the shim locations. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_fan_belt/911_fan_belt.htm If it's rubbing, the scrape marks will be very bright. Some shops specialize in alternator/starter repair, however, I am not sure if they'll handle Porsche alternators.
