Please Please Tell Me I Can Fix This - Pressure Sender

Did my heater back-date this morning. This was the final touch on my rebuild. At this point I am VERY tired of working on the car - only put 250 miles on it so far and it is time to enjoy it.

Ok, so here is the deal.

I had to rotate the wire that connects to the pressure sender in order to install the new fan housing outlet on the right side of the engine. When tightening down the 6mm nut it broke the "pole" on the sender (when I say "pole" I am referring to the threaded piece that the 6mm nut screws onto).

This pole seems to be brass (maybe?) and has a wire inside of it - it basically cracked in half and I can see the wire inside. I was able to get a new nut on what was left of the pole, but my pressure gauge is now pegged at the top.

Is there a fix for this or do I need to buy a new sender?

Luckily it isn't an expensive part, but it is a big pain to install.

Please tell me someone has done this before.

Here is a pic for reference. Not sure what that black casing is - mine doesn't have it.

looks like a new one is in your future.

So there is no fix?

Why would it make a difference that the top half of the pole broke off? Is there something at the tip that affects how it works?

Is that top part (black portion) removable? I have another sender on my old engine.

somehow you have an open circuit. that's why the gauge is pegged. if you can jerry rig it to function with glue or something, fine, but they aren't that expensive.

ditto!

Bump ....

Still looking for answers as to why the tip is so important to the proper function of the sender. What makes the circuit close?

"make it right" ... well, sometimes you have to improvise on these cars.

I hardly think my car would be "wrong" if I found a way to fix it.

What you have done is to rotate the internal connection to ground by overtightening the terminal. basically FUBAR. Replace it unless oil pressure is not important to you.

Yiup.. new one. I over cranked mine and the threaded shaft broke in half. There is a copper wire soldered to the top of the shaft so when the shaft separates the wire does not make a good connection, apparently.

I had to order a new one to replace the brand new one I broke... oh of course, later, going through a random box looking for some other new part I bought I found a second new replacement I had bought and forgot I had... *sigh* I guess forgetting you already bought two is what happens when you take 3 years to rebuild a motor ;) or am I just gettin' old....

Best regards,

Michael

Yes, sometimes you do.....BUT,...how you gonna' "improvise" on this one?,..a new one will "make it right", so to speak (and what I meant).

No, you're car wouldn't be wrong if you "rigged" it (no one said it would be....). It would be just that: rigged.

I wouldn't toy with something as critical as oil pressure intrumentation......thru any process but the proper one: a new one (as many have suggested, already)

Do let us know of any clever rigging that functions well for you.

Thanks for the replies.

If I fix it I will let you all know. Maybe it will be as simple as soldering the top of the post (what is left of it).
