Start problem
I know the answer to this is somewhere in the forum, but I have read posts until my eyes are rolling up in my head with nothing quite like this one. It begins with what may be unrelated problems. The car is a 1982 911SC with what is probably an OEM Bosch starter.
First, when starting the car after sitting a couple of days the starter remained engaged even after turning off the ignition switch and removing the key. In other words, the starter kept spinning uncommanded. When I switched the ignition back to the "run" position the engine started and ran. Second, while driving cross country from northwest Colorado to Missouri I stopped for gas after a nearly 4-hour leg. Upon attempting to restart I got nothing. Maybe a slight click, but there was a lot of noise at the truck stop. The lights burned brightly, but no starter action when turning the key. I shanghaied a couple of young truckers to give me a push to pop the clutch and drove the rest of the way home without shutting it off. Of course, when I got home three hours later it started just fine. Ideas? |
try testing the starter relay then check the starter solonoid. then check the ignition (wich is usually unlikley(

What starter relay?
The Solenoid is the starter relay. Sounds like it's acting up. After so many years of service, it's time to take the starter off for a rebuild. Removing it is a little tricky because of the Allen barrel nut on top. Do a search on how to. |
