patching tie rod boot slits?
 

at the risk of seeming cheap...
anyone been successful at patching cuts in e.g. tie rod boots?
maybe something like clean with alcohol and apply liquid electrical tape or a layer of RTV... or even suture.

I used some black 3M weather strip glue and applied a few layers

good, thanks - I think I have some of that.. or can get it easily. As I remember that stuff is very sticky and then dries to a semi-flexible state.. sounds like it would work.

Check out some local garages, we always have good used boots setting around off old tie rods.

I've got a good used set of boots from my SC after my turbo tie-rod upgrade. Standard boots - not turbo. You can have them for shipping costs.

If you measure them you could probably get some new ones for a BMW that will work from this place.

I have a split one also. It's not the cost of the part but the effort to replace that is holding me up. These can be a b.... to break loose even with the proper tools.

JFairman - that looks like the ticket... great find - I just need to figure out the method + tool to get them loose.

JFairman - I just ordered dust boots to have for my 540 and 328.. it seems the boots fit both cars - order some for control arms and some for tie rods... we'll see how they fit. Comes with grease. Wonderful if these work... saves hundreds of $$$ and e.g. tie rods saves new alignment.. which I just got completed. I have two damaged boots on the 540.. and if I look I probably have one or more on the 328. Thanks.

It looks like the boots from BPMDesign could fit a number of applications.
I'll try to remember to send out dimensions when I get them.

I went to the website for the tape mentioned above www.rescuetape.com and it looks like it sticks very well to itself but not to anything else. A good thing to have around but maybe not real good for this issue.
