Fuel tank repair on 1972 911
Well the move from Oregon looked painless until!!!
Riding on the Penske car carrier for 3200 miles I guess the car was to low as the fuel tank rubbed against the trailer and now I have a fuel leak from the tank. I searched the previous posts but didn't find anything regarding the actual repair. Can I repair the hole with something like fiberglass or as one poster said, take the tank down to a radiator shop and have it cleaned and welded ? Kent

Yes, you can repair the tank. Years ago like back in the 50''s my dad used to repair gas tanks with solder. Clean the hole to bare metal, tin it with solder, take another piece of clean metal and tin it. Place the piece of tinned metal on top of the hole and solder it.
Now, to solder it you can do it two ways - a torch or a soldering iron - 200 Watt. If you chose to use the torch, it is important that you flush the tank out - no smell of gas - and if you do have some fumes in there, there will be a mild pop which might scare you. On the other hand if you use the electric soldering iron, you shouldn't have any problems. Steve "A Porsche does more then just go fast in a straight line" |
