Chrome horn grills for '73 Carrera RS?

Did any '73 Carrera RS cars have chrome horn grills?

Although I've never seen a photo of a '73 RS without the black grills, I recently was told that a certain number of early RS's actually did have chrome grills. Can anybody confirm this? Does anybody have a photo of a real RS with chrome grills?

I have a '73 RS recreation with the usual black plastic horn grills. I am going to add "thru-the-grill" driving lights and I'm thinking about switching to chrome horn grills simply because I think they look great with the lights. I'm not a stickler to the perfect RS look for my car. I don't need it to be 100% "correct". I don't even have correct colors anyway (mexico blue wheels). But I'm just curious if it is correct or not.

Thanks for your input!
~Cary

The E-Programme cars for the 72 model year were the first cars to have the black horn grilles.
The D- Proramme cars ending with the 71 model year were the last ones to have bright plated grilles.

The first RS prototypes did indeed have chrome horn grilles. This is well documented. They also had chrome surrounds to the light cluster front and rear. Some also had 72 bodies i.e. with the oil filler cap in the rear wing. One of these prototypes was recently sold in the States at auction for a substantial amount.

Mike

well.... your car looks pretty nice, as "incorrect" as it stands right now. If you do go with chrome grilles, think of matching silver trim front and rear lenses too

Have some fun- its your ride!

Ummm...no. '72 models had chrome horn grilles and light surrounds. Black horn grilles didn't appear until the '73 models. You were probably thinking of the decklid engine grille, which did indeed change to black for the E- programme cars.

Yes. Agree.

Black is correct for a '73.

You guys are a great resource. That is exactly the info I was looking for. And I agree, the light lens surrounds should be next as well.

Thanks!
