Ordering a VIN Tag?

I recently tried to get an A pillar vin tag for my 88 930. The Porsche dealer (Sonnen) took my money and ordered it from Germany. Four or five weeks later two black stickers about .75"X2.5" with the vin printed in white showed up. The dealer wasn´t sure what the deal with these was but when they checked with Germany, Porsche said the metal A pillar tags are no longer availble.

Does anyone know if this sounds right? If so, is there any other way to order or obtain one?

Thanks-
Craig Backer

Craig,
I have been looking for one of these metal tags as well for a long time. I have called several dealers and several parts companies and to my knowledge they are not available. I did find a guy that says he can make them but they are not going to be cheap for a small run so I have been putting it off until my rebuild is closer to being finished. The other issue for me is then matching the number and letter font to factory.

Try
Datatags.com

They usually keep a variety of tags in stock. Dont know if he'll have a Porsche tag or not but it's worth a try.

There may be legal issues associated with replacing a VIN plate. I used to work for GM (Chevrolet division), & it was a very big deal indeed to change a VIN plate.

I remember an instance when 2 Camaros were built & their VIN plates somehow got mixed up at the factory. Once the problem was identified, new VIN plates were shipped to the dealers involved (one of which was my dealer). I don't remember the details, but a GM service representative had to observe the VIN plate replacement & I think there was a fair amount of legal paperwork to complete as well.

The concern obviously is that people don't change VIN plates for less-than-honorable reasons.

I've experienced some (indirect) research in this area...replacing, emphasis on replacing a VIN tag can be done, but to do so properly involves quite a bit of paperwork and officialdom involvement. To just obtain a tag and use a rivet gun is VERY illegal!
