Rubber seal at engine sheet metal...

I was under the car this evening poking around and noticed that the body seal against the engine pan sheet metal is a two layer rubber seal. Does that mean that one lip goes on top of the engine pan and the other goes underneath?

Thanks,

It doesn't go in between. I thought so too, but no.

if both flaps go on one side why would they have designed the thing with two flaps? It all seems to fit very well with one up and one down... new to me but I never researched it.. just assumed.

In my case I noticed that I had more space between the body and the engine sheet metal on the left side than the right. If in fact I was going to go with the one up and one down theory it would make the right side difficult to do.

The whole purpose of the seal is to keep air from being sucked in around the engine tin instead of from the grill on the engine lid. Maybe they thought two thin flaps were better than one. If you put one flap over the engine tin you make it easier for air to get sucked in.

it's a bit hard to know what they were thinking... maybe since the engine is loaded from the bottom with sheet metal attached... the lips need to be pulled around the sheet metal... two thin lips probably move easier than one thick one.. don't know. I wonder if someone has some sort of original picture or diagram... probably either way works fine.. just keep the air from coming around there along with all the dust from the road/etc.
