3.2 on carbs

I'm thinking of running a '85 3.2 engine on carbs. Are there any known hang-ups?
Do I need to get a new distributor or can the original be fitted with an after-market system?

Plus:
Throttle response, some top-end power

Minus:
fuel mileage (typically about 10mpg worse. so if you average 24=14 on carbs)
expensive (a standard 3.2 intake and computer is worth about $1500 used, while used Weber 40s are easily $2k rebuilt, and a New PMO 46mm kit is over $3000)
Fiddly (you are going to be adjusting them, etc., etc.)

And then there is ignition...a coil-pack ignition is easily $1k. There is no way to adapt the standard distributor with carbs as the 3.2 one is controlled by the computer (DME).

For me personally, I would spend the bux on a chip for the DME and exhaust with 3.2's and 3.6's......Carbs are cool, but very low-tech...Time is money

I am running a stock (internals) 3.2 with 40 Ida's on top on pmo manifolds. I have ssi's and a dynomax muffler ( bursche type set up) This is a hodge podge of parts I had laying around, and I installed it while I tear into my 3.0 .I am using a 2.7 distributor with points to fire an msd box for ignition ( most simple ignition I could think of, and had it all laying around). I have still a little carb tuning to do, and the dizzy needs curved, but the thing runs real strong. Pulls every bit as hard, if not harder than my 3.0 with 9:8to 1, 964 cams, minor port work, msd, and headers. am sure it runs better than my buddies carrera with weltmeister chip, cat bypass pipe, and sport muffler. I think if you were to build a hotrod 3.2, you would probably want to go to 46mm pmo's, or webers if you could find them. While I agree that carbs are low tech, , and suck up some of your spare time, they sure are a cool old shcool way to make power, and if there are no emissions restrictions in your area, what the heck. Plus nothing sounds as beautiful as six barrels pulling air. justs my .02

I love my carbs but as per above they are gonna kill your gas mileage.

As long as you are fine with paying 2x as much to drive your car then do it.

When gas prices go again - not "If" - it will cost even more...
