930 vs. 993
Guys,
A buddy of mine is looking at getting his first 911, and wanted me to post a topic on this forum on his behalf. He has it narrowed down to two types in his price range. Either a late 80's 930, or 993. Either way, he wants an air cooled car. Between the two cars, which would perform better in acceleration? The turbo 3.3L or normal 3.6 in the 993?

They are very different animals. I think the performance from both cars, stock v. stock would be very close with the nod to the 930. The turbo rush is something that can't be forgotten, while the 993 has smooth linear power. Of course, if you start modding a 930, the sky's the limit! Up the boost a little and you get more power. Install headers, exhaust, bigger turbo, bigger ic, fuel head, and fuel enrichment should get you at least 400 hp.
As for driveability, I'll give the nod to the 993 as it has good ac, a 6 speed, and power steering. If he wants a raw car without creature comforts, get the 930.

I was faced with the same decision too. I have driven both and even drove a couple 993 tt's including a 993 twin turbo S. I opted for the 993. It's a great car! I wanted something that I could drive everyday. A stock 930 and stock 993 are about the same in terms of acceleration. When it comes down to everything else, the 993 has a lot more modern features that are very worthwhile, working a/c, abs, power steering, coilover suspension, smooth shifting 6 speed transmission, twin ignition.

The gears on a 4 speed 930 are too far apart to make it easy to drive.
He should drive both, both cruising through traffic and aggressively through some twisties. The 993 is very able in both arenas, the turbo is more fun and exciting and less forgiving. |

993 unless he wants the hardcore experience...but seeing as how he's so bent on it being aircooled...maybe the 930's visceral thrill is the car he's looking for.

Have him drives both. That is the only way to decide. I love both and they are very different cars. I would buy the 930 since I own one myself. I would like to also own a 993 one day in the future.

Both are very expensive to modify and almost to valuable to track it like you stole it.
Get a good Carrera 3.2, full suspension kit, light weight interior, and second set of wheels. Spend the rest on club & track fees and a 3 day driving course. If it is an only car and daily driver, the 993 would be my choice. |

If it's his first 911, he'd be much better off with a 993.

I'm fortunate to have one of each and the good news is that there are enough differences between the two to make the decision relatively easy. Ask him what his priorities are in the way of the car and post his answers here. It won't take but a minute to get you the best recommendation for him...
As far as acceleration goes both are quick but the turbo rush is unique and can be quite addicting.
