What size tail pipe?
 

Right now I have a Dansk sport with a 3" outlet. Would a 4" give a more throaty sound? I may go to a dual outlet, but I know that will be LOUD! I can weld the outlet on, just wondering if a larger outlet would make a difference in sound. Thanks!

I doubt a wider outlet will change sound so much.I know for sure that a 2in2out sounds much more throat and ratty than a 1 out.I have a two out and love it...my 2 cents,john

Try this at your second tailpipe area.

1. Scribe a circle where the tailpipe will attach to the muffler.

2. Inside the scribed circle, drill a series of holes, starting at 1/2"- 3/4". Space them far enough apart so they don't intersect as you gradually increase the hole size (see next step).

3. After creating the first set of holes, start engine and listen.

a. Too quiet: Increase hole size. A cutting torch provides a short cut method, but not as precise (not sure one has to be).

b. Loud enough: Temporarily tack-weld tailpipe onto muffler area, then retest

c. Too loud: plug-weld accordingly (note: starting with a 3" opening decreases the area one can patch and decrease the hole size)

Modifying the internal baffling/routing of exhaust gases can increase the overall sound level significantly. This requires cutting through the shell to access the interior. However, it's harder to back-track should it become too loud.

Should you want to play around with the guts, the archives have samples of mufflers in various stages of undress.

I have a Dansk sport 1 in 2 out 84mm this is on a euro car,
but it sounds fantastic, a slight metallicy sound but with the Porsche note. Even at Porsche in Germany they came out to see and listen to it! I use the car a lot on long trips in europe and the UK at speeds of 95 mph to 160 mph with no droning. Even have cars pull up along side on the motor-way to here that sound.

Over this side of the pond, one of the standard comments on very large tailpipes is 'hey, you gonna put a grate over that to keep the winos out?' :rolleyes:

BTW, I've got a standard muffler 1 in 1 out modified w/ a second tailpipe. Has a nice, throaty sound.
